Gleeson’s lip curled. “You’re not seriously trying to pin all these murders on me?”

“You don’t think it’s a coincidence that everywhere you live people start dying?”

His nostrils flared and alarm filled his eyes. “That’s exactly what it is. A coincidence.”

“I’m sure if we go back and look at other similar incidents across the country, we are going to find some crossover with your movements.”

Gleeson watched them carefully now. Innocent people tended to calm down over time. Guilty people tended to become more stressed. This man was hard to read.

“Did you move to Fairbanks to get closer to Darby O’Roarke or did you simply need fresh hunting grounds?” Eban asked.

Gleeson’s Adam’s apple bobbed up and down, but he didn’t speak.

“I assume you faked the break-in at your practice to either have a legitimate connection to the inquiry or so you could get rid of certain pieces of evidence without raising suspicion.” Eban stared at the man. Gleeson still didn’t react.

“We have DNA from the Carstairs crime scene that I am sure will match that found at other scenes. We have your credit card being used to purchase a burner phone that pinged off cell towers close to the two murders. In addition, we have the purchase of a new pair of snow boots and a hunting knife yesterday.”

“That’s impossible.” Gleeson looked scared and then he stared off into space for a long moment.

“And we have the child pornography downloaded onto your laptop. If you co-operate with us on this investigation, we won’t charge you with possession of the child pornography and you will avoid being labeled as a pedophile in prison. Debbie Abbot’s house and vehicle are being examined. What are the chances of us finding your DNA there?”

Gleeson swallowed repeatedly, clearly suppressing his emotions. “If I confess, what happens? Is there a trial?”

Exhilaration raced through Eban. If I confess were not the words of an innocent man. Was this nearly over?

Signy put the photographs away. “Yes, we avoid a trial. Your attorney can discuss a possible plea deal with the District Attorney’s office.”

Gleeson whispered in his attorney’s ear and the man whispered back.

“Okay.” A sob escaped as a sharp inhale. “I admit it. I did it. I killed Martin Carstairs, Adele Surrey, Debbie Abbot and Corinne Brown. I did it while my family thought I was working in my office and they never had any clue. That’s important. I want my family left out of this.”

Eban refrained from revealing his disgust. Maybe the guy should have thought of that before he’d stabbed anyone to death.

“I tried to frame Darby O’Roarke. I thought it would be fun to torment her. Almost worked too. Good luck finding her a new therapist by the way.” Gleeson deliberately taunted him.

Rage filled Eban but he pushed it down. He left the room as Signy began walking the guy through events. Letting Gleeson see he was affected would be giving the guy a small victory and Eban wouldn’t give the guy a drop of rain during a year-long drought.
