Elliot squeezed a hand on her shoulder. “Hey, it’s okay.” He leaned down and said quietly, “They have to be nice to you even if you are a knife-wielding maniac.”
Darby grimaced and forced a smile. “I will remember that if it’s ever an issue.” Technically, she had once stabbed someone to death. Though she hadn’t been the villain on that occasion—instead, she’d helped save herself from some very real monsters.
Her mind shied away from the memories. She thought about the bad things that had happened on the island less and less nowadays. Therapy had helped. Her friendship with Quentin and Haley, and this magical new chapter with Eban helped. These were the things that kept her grounded in the now, not dwelling unhealthily on the past.
“The police released your truck and a whole slew of your belongings. The desk sergeant has most of it, but you need to sign for everything.” He dangled her keys and she held out her palm, snatching them out of the air when he dropped them.
“Excellent. Thanks.” It was good to have her wheels back even if right now she was perfectly content being ferried around by Eban. In fact, the thought of not being chauffeured by Eban made her incredibly sad.
She glanced up and caught Eban staring at them for a few seconds before heading in their direction.
“Kim Gleeson is in need of a good attorney if you’re interested,” Eban addressed Elliot as he got closer.
“Kim Gleeson is my therapist,” Darby informed Elliot, crossing her arms over her chest to subdue a shiver.
Elliot tipped his head to one side, consideringly. “I’m afraid that might go against my current client’s interests, so I’ll decline. I have some names I can recommend if he’s interested.”
“Give them to the detective, would you?” Eban said.
Elliot leaned down toward her. Stage whispered, “I think he’s trying to get rid of me.”
She nodded toward where Signy Torgerson was talking to the booking sergeant. “Could be your big chance.”
Elliot arched an amused brow at her. “Don’t go anywhere. I want to talk about a couple of things before I head back to my hotel.”
He left and Darby looked at Eban from under her lashes trying to disguise the enormity of her feelings for the guy. Now wasn’t the time for the big reveal. He was working and it was too important that he figure out whether or not Gleeson was the killer.
“Any progress?” she asked instead.
He herded her gently back inside the conference room with her hot chocolate in hand.
“A lot of circumstantial evidence. Are you okay?”
“I’m fine. Tired,” she admitted.
They exchanged a look that spoke of all the things they’d done last night, and his eyes softened. “Sorry,” he mouthed, silently.
“I’m not,” she whispered back.
He squeezed her shoulders and released her. She was aware of many eyes and ears around them.
“Anything from Corinne Brown yet?” he asked Allan Robertson who was still going over files in the conference room.
