Eban closed the door and narrowed his eyes at the information they had on the whiteboard. “Find out who. She started in the lab this September. I found her in Darby’s apartment when I went to pick up some of Darby’s things yesterday. Lenny claimed she was after a book but legged it when I announced myself.” He’d seen her on the videos dancing with Martin and Darby, but he didn’t recall Darby ever mentioning her on their regular phone calls. “See if you can find out anything about her. When she applied for UAF. Where she came from.”
Signy nodded tiredly. “I’ll add her to our list of people to reinterview.”
“I’ve requested the victim profiles from other cases suspected of being the work of this UNSUB but haven’t received them yet.” For some reason, Lincoln Frazer was reluctant to share the information with the local cops over email. Eban suspected he didn’t want it leaking to the press and spooking the UNSUB. The FBI personnel, including the agent who would act as a decoy in Darby’s stead, had been delayed due to the bad weather. They were expecting them to arrive via a State Trooper aircraft sometime tomorrow if the weather eased up. Eban wouldn’t hold his breath as the forecast wasn’t good. It was currently whiteout conditions.
He wanted to narrow down the suspect pool as much as possible. He’d discussed it with Quentin and Haley, and they were arranging a bodyguard and a private jet to pick up Darby. That plane couldn’t land until this intensifying storm front dissipated either.
The bottom line was Darby was leaving town as soon as he and Quentin could arrange it. He could force her into protective custody, but he didn’t want to do that. He’d talk her into it, and she’d go willingly. If she refused, he wasn’t leaving her until she was safe and if that meant losing his job, so be it. He hoped it didn’t come to that. There was nothing else he wanted to do with his life.
A yawn caught him unawares and he covered his mouth. “Sorry. We need to reinterview everyone who went to the dance and ask them specifically about the period from 10:30—11:30 PM. Who was there? Was anyone acting suspicious? Are the images and videos that were uploaded time-stamped?” He looked at Allan Robertson who looked as dog-tired as he felt. They all needed to stop soon and get a few hours’ sleep.
Allan wrote a note. “Some are. Some aren’t. One of the problems was the hall was dimly lit and the quality of some of the footage is poor. Nothing popped in terms of suspects, but we are trying to ID everyone on the videos to create a comprehensive working list of people who attended.”
“Talk to Darby tomorrow. She might be able to help identify people and seeing the images might jog a memory. Concentrate on our target time slot to start with—if she feels up to it.” Eban couldn’t keep the warning note out of his voice.
