She shrugged out of her coat and noticed how Elliot Byrne’s eyes traveled down her body. It sent a shiver of awareness through her that she ignored. She went over to sit in the chair opposite Darby.
“How about we start over and figure out who is doing this to you?”
Big green eyes locked on hers. “Isn’t that what you were supposed to be doing all along?”
Signy shook her head. “Before I was focused on the two murder victims but obviously this situation is more complex than we first realized.”
Darby shifted but didn’t relax. “Maybe that’s why this person has been getting away with this for so long? The local police can’t handle complex?”
Ouch. “I realize you probably resent me for interviewing you, but it wasn’t personal. I am doing my job the same way Eban Winters does his job. Right now, I’d like to catch Martin and Adele’s killer before they strike again. I think you could possibly help me with that.” Signy pulled a notepad out of her laptop bag. “I think you might know this person even if only in passing.”
“That’s what Eban said.” Darby’s voice was warm when she said the Fed’s name.
Signy recalled how Darby had admitted in the interview she wanted more from the guy. Had they bridged that professional distance yet? Because Signy recognized the look in Eban Winter’s eyes when he stared at Darby and that heat was anything but professional.
She flicked a glance over at Elliot Byrne who was in the kitchenette preparing hot drinks even though she’d rather have had a scotch.
“How about we go through your weekly routines and make lists of the places you go and people you see,” Signy suggested. “List your acquaintances, especially those who are more recent.”
Darby shot Elliot a look.
“I don’t think it could hurt.” He made a face and brought in a tray of teas and coffees along with milk and cream in small jugs and a bowl of sugar cubes.
He set it down on the table between them.
Signy quirked a surprised brow. “All part of the service or do you charge extra for hot beverages?”
“This is how I worked my way through college.” Elliot smiled and Signy did not miss the spark in his gaze when he glanced at her. She didn’t trust it one bit. “I was a barista before I became a barrister.”
Darby laughed and Signy smiled.
The man was too charming and good-looking for her own good. The last time they’d crossed paths in Anchorage he’d gotten the charges against his client dismissed by a judge who seemed more impressed by Elliot’s charm than the DA’s evidence. Of course, the fact her partner had slept with a witness did not help their case. Signy had bumped into Elliot in a bar not long after, but they’d both been on dates with other people.
She remembered that their gazes had collided and held for longer than they should. Not that she’d ever get involved with a defense attorney, she reminded herself sternly. He’d make her a laughingstock with other cops. But it didn’t do her ego any harm to let herself believe for a few moments that he might find her attractive. As a single mom of a fifteen-year-old boy, she needed all the ego boosts she could get.
