“Did Darby O’Roarke—”
“I can’t discuss my patient’s treatment with you.”
Signy tried a different tactic. “Do you have a list of people who attend the group sessions?”
“I already promised to send a list to that FBI Agent who was here earlier.”
Signy hid her irritation.
“I’ll copy you on that, on the condition you’ll keep the information private as much as you are able under the circumstances. I already sent everyone from the group an email telling them about the break-in and that appointments are cancelled through Monday unless it’s an emergency. I didn’t specifically mention the videos being stolen.” He looked at her from under his brows. “I don’t want it to get out to the public.” He grabbed the milk out of the small refrigerator. “I thought whoever took the equipment might find out and exploit the information whereas if he remains in the dark as to what he has he’ll probably sell it to get some quick cash and I have a hope of recovering the data before anyone knows it’s missing.”
Signy was all for keeping the information out of the public domain. She’d be even happier if the FBI backed off from interfering in her investigation and trying to make her look bad—assuming Winters wasn’t involved in this break-in or homicide in some way. From all accounts he was a stellar agent with an excellent rep. Murdering Adele Surrey in cold blood to get his unofficial girlfriend off the hook when Fairbanks PD had already released her seemed a little extreme.
“Are your grad students ever involved with your private patients?” Signy asked. She couldn’t ignore another link to the college.
“They don’t see confidential patient records but sometimes, with permission, some students with an interest in becoming clinical practitioners will sit in during a session and observe. They do attend the group therapy sessions sometimes.”
“Any of them sit in with Darby O’Roarke during her therapy?”
“No, Darby doesn’t trust many people yet.” He sent her a sad smile. “This will set her back considerably in the trust stakes. That’s one of the reasons I offered my services yesterday.” He leaned back against the counter. “I don’t think she’s even told me the full extent of what she went through during her captivity. She did mention that her supervisor had asked her about the possibility of returning to the island this summer. She asked me if I thought it would be a good idea in terms of healing.”
“She suffers from PTSD?”
“I’m not at liberty to discuss her diagnosis.” His smile said, “Nice try though.”
“What did you say to her about the fieldwork?” Signy asked impatiently.
“I asked her if she thought it was a good idea, but she didn’t have an answer for me. Personally, I think Jim Nilsson is a selfish and egotistical asshole to ask that of her. Again, I don’t think he knows the full extent of what she endured last summer. That is between Darby and him. It isn’t my business.”
