- About the Author
“Do you want one here?”
“No,” she said. “I like how this is new for all of us.”
“Me too.”
Jana looked down at the table. “I can’t have a friend over, right?”
“What do you mean?”
“It’s like, a secret, where we live.”
“Oh, yeah. But we could meet somewhere. Or you could go over their house. Do you . . . do you have a boyfriend or girlfriend?”
“I didn’t mean”—Jana shook her head—“about anyone in particular.”
“Sorry. I didn’t want to embarrass you.”
“It’s okay. You didn’t. No, I’m . . .” Her eyes filled up with tears.
“What is it?” Izabel reached her arm over the table.
“Is it a secret because he still wants to kill me?”
“No, no, honey. It’s because I’m a witness. They’re protecting me.”
“He might still want to kill me.”
“No—”
“He knows I survived.”
“He does, but they said it’s all been random. Your family wasn’t targeted.”
“But they don’t know that. They don’t know that for sure.”
Cami screamed in her room.
Jana rushed to her, a step in front of Izabel.
“It’s happening again,” Kaito said.
“He’s out,” Cami said. And then she shouted, “I don’t want to talk about him!”
“She’s talking to someone,” Jana said.
“It sounds like that but we don’t know. It might be a night terror,” Izabel said.
“Her eyes are closed.”
“Yeah.”
“I used to get night terrors, and my parents told me about them. They said my eyes were open. I wasn’t awake and I didn’t recognize them, but my eyes were open.”
“We took her to the doctor and they said she’s fine,” Kaito said.
“Okay, so she’s fine and she’s talking to someone,” Jana said.
“He’s on the street where you lived,” Cami said.
“Who is?” Jana asked.
“We don’t know,” Izabel said.
“Near my old house?” Cami said. “I want to go back to my old house. I don’t like it here. I miss my house.
“You can’t go back there.
“I know. My mom told me that.”
“Maybe you should go to bed, Jana,” Izabel said. “We’ll stay with her.”
Jana got up, but she said, “I want to stay with her, too. I can sleep in here.”
“She’d keep you up,” Kaito said. “You need to sleep.” He looked at Izabel. “Everybody needs to get some sleep, yeah?”
“Oh, yeah, yeah,” Izabel said. “I’ll get ready for bed, too.”
As she was walking Jana out of the room, Cami said, “He’s doing it again. They’re going to die.”
Jana stopped. “What did she say?”
“Don’t say that!
“I’m sorry, Cami. They’re defeated.
“No.” Cami started crying.
“Why is she saying that?” Jana said.
“I don’t know,” Kaito said.
“Wake her up!” Jana said.
