  41. About the Author

“You’re Lucy,” Izabel said. She started to remember all the things she’d heard about her—the woman who held séances at the spiritual center. The town medium. How she would brush into someone at the mall and tell them someone was thinking about them, adding some small detail, like a tattoo they had, so the person she was talking to got goose bumps, or burst into tears, or couldn’t catch their breath.

“That’s right.” Lucy smiled.

Izabel felt disoriented. “Thank you for telling me,” she said.

“Wait a second,” Paz said. “Stop, just stop the chairs.” She came around in front of them. “Who is this?” she asked, looking at Izabel and pointing at Lucy.

“It’s Lucy,” Izabel said.

“Lucy who? How do you know she saved someone?” Paz asked Lucy.

“She was on the news,” Matt said.

“Not that part. That there were two survivors, yes. But that one saved the other, no. You,” she said to Matt, “only know because you’ve been one of Jana’s nurses.”

“I didn’t know it was a secret,” he said, looking ashamed. “I told—”

“Did you tell this woman?” she asked.

“No,” he said.

“Then, okay, shut up.” Paz looked at Lucy. “How do you know?”

“Adira, the girl’s mother, told me,” Lucy said.

Paz kept looking at her as if she hadn’t answered.

“Lucy is a medium,” Izabel said.

“A medium?”

Lucy nodded.

Paz threw up her hands and started walking again.

“I can try and be in touch with her, if it would help,” Lucy called after Paz. Then she turned to Izabel. “Now I know I can reach her through you. What’s your name?”

“Izabel.”

“Would you come visit me, Izabel?”

“In the hospital?”

“No, at the spiritual center. They can’t keep me in here too long. I got dehydrated is all.”

“Okay,” Izabel said.

Paz was still walking away from them.

“We better go,” Izabel said, looking up at Matt.

Back at Jana’s room, Izabel asked Matt if she could get out of the chair now.

“Are you sure you’re feeling steady?”

“Yes,” she said. “Look.” She stood up and spun around.

Jana smiled.

“Let me know if either of you need anything,” Matt said, leaving with the wheelchair.

“What happened?” Jana said.

“I fainted.”

“Does that happen to you a lot?”

“That was my first time actually. Can I sit with you?”

Jana nodded.

So they sat together on the bed and waited for Kaito and Cami. They weren’t ready to talk, but Izabel liked sitting beside her.

When Kaito and Cami came in, Cami was hiding behind Kaito’s leg.

“This is Jana,” Izabel said.

“We’re so glad to have you,” Kaito said.

“So glad,” Izabel said, feeling awful for not having said it already.

“Cami, say hello,” Kaito said.

Cami stayed hidden.

Jana said, “Hello, Cami.”
