  41. About the Author

Izabel hadn’t been able to bring herself to look at the news, to learn all the family’s names, to see the pictures of them when they were not dying on the floor. And Kaito and Andy knew not to talk to her about it. Not yet.

Paz also told her that they’d know which new house they could move into by the time they came for Jana. But she added, “Even if you’re being paranoid.”

“Can I pick up her things?” Izabel asked.

“You mean go to my crime scene?”

“Yes,” Izabel said.

“No, you may not,” Paz said.

“Please.”

“I’ll see what I can do. But you are not allowed anywhere near that house.”

“Okay,” Izabel said. And she was embarrassed by the way she wanted to see the house again, not only to have clothes for Jana, but to be inside it, to touch the things she’d passed in the night, to see the knife’s damage in the sunlight, when all the details of it would show.

Izabel had made Cami an appointment with a therapist in her first days at Andy’s house. She’d scheduled it ambitiously. Now that the day had arrived, it would be Izabel’s first time leaving the house.

“You don’t have to come with us,” Kaito said.

“I do,” Izabel said. “I can’t stay in here forever.”

They packed snacks for Cami in her little plastic containers.

“Would you blindfold me?” Izabel asked.

Kaito looked at her. “If that would help.”

Both Izabel and Kaito were encouraged to be at the appointment, but, at least partly, Kaito didn’t want to go. He didn’t want to miss work. He was still holding on to the idea that if he made himself desirable enough, they would grant them permission to leave, despite the police’s interest in Izabel.

Kaito tied a scarf around Izabel’s eyes, and then he took hold of her arm. Cami held Izabel’s other hand and together they walked her out to the car. Cami let go as she climbed in. Kaito put his hand gently on Izabel’s head and she bent herself in, like she was getting into the back of a police car in an old television show.

“Do you want to take it off now?” Kaito asked, after he closed the door behind him.

“No,” she said.

“How do you spell ‘cliff’?” Cami said.

“‘Cliff’?” Izabel said. “Like, ‘Careful if you’re ever near a cliff!’?”

“Because there could be an avalanche!” Cami said.

“Because you could fall over the edge!” Izabel said. But she added, “Oh. I see. You’re thinking of the bottom.”

“Yeah.”

“I was thinking of the top.”

“You have to say, ‘Be careful if you’re ever near the top of a cliff.’”
