- About the Author
The memory of leaving the woman on the floor replayed in Izabel’s mind and she began to panic again. Was she supposed to have given her mask to her? Was she supposed to have died and let this girl have her mother? Was she supposed to have left Cami like that? Her eyes scrambled and she tried to sit up again.
“We will restrain you if we have to,” An said.
Izabel screamed and began to cry. They gave her more of the sedative.
As she fell asleep she said, “I saw the killer.” Everyone heard that.
When she woke up in the hospital, it was hard to open her eyes. She lay there, listening, and she thought she was dreaming when she heard Kaito.
“Why can’t we go in?” he said.
“I’m sorry, but the police need to speak with her.”
“I understand that, but why can’t we be with her until then?”
We. He was saying we. He had Cami with him. They were both okay. If this were only a dream, it would be a cruel one.
“Isn’t she a witness?” Kaito asked.
“No. She’s being treated as a suspect.”
“A suspect? Cut the crap. Let us in there.”
“I can’t allow that.”
“I want to talk to someone who can.” Kaito sounded angry. “I want to talk to someone!”
“You two should go home,” the officer said.
Izabel opened her eyes and screamed. It was the only sound she could muster as she watched the uniformed officer blocking Kaito and Cami at the door. The officer turned to look at her, and then he turned away again. He asked for a nurse.
Izabel found her voice and, as loud as she could, she said, “Not our house. Not our house.”
“We’ll wait here,” Kaito said back, over the officer’s shoulder.
“Not our house,” she repeated.
“We’ll be in the waiting room,” he said.
She nodded.
“Do you want us to go now?”
She nodded again, even though she wanted to hold Cami more than she’d ever wanted to do anything before in her life.
When the nurse came in, it was Luis. Izabel tried to tell him everything—“I saw him and I tried to save them”—but it was hard to put her thoughts in order—“I killed a woman.”
“You saved her,” Luis said.
“No, not the girl. The woman.”
“Oh,” Luis said. “Maybe don’t say that to anyone else.”
Izabel nodded and tears were rolling down her cheeks and they stung in the cut.
“My skin is under her fingernails.”
“You really need to stop talking now, okay?”
Izabel turned her head and the tears from one eye pooled on the side of her nose and the tears from the other eye rolled into her ear. She pushed her ear hard into the pillow and heard the water squish.
“Do you need more of the sedative?” Luis asked.
