  41. About the Author

“We want to move forward with your plan,” Paz said, “if you’re still willing. Andy’s reviewed the paperwork. Waivers, et cetera, waiving all liability in the case of injury or death.”

“What?” Kaito said.

“It’s standard,” Andy said.

“No,” Kaito said.

“You can’t do this unless you sign,” Paz said to Izabel.

“And if something happens?” Kaito said.

“Obviously the goal is that no harm comes to Izabel or to anyone on my team.”

“I’m okay with it,” Izabel said.

“Why? Why are you okay with any of this?” Kaito said.

“Because we could catch him,” Izabel said. “Don’t you think we could?”

“I don’t know,” he said. “Are you going to tell us more details?”

“We’ll make a show of Izabel going back to your old house, put it on the news and everything—‘the woman who faced the killer.’ Really piss him off. We’ve already cleared the houses around yours. There will be a suited team in the house next door. There’s already a full suit waiting for Izabel at the house.”

Nobody said anything.

“Is there something else?” Paz asked.

Izabel shook her head.

“Jana’s not going to like this,” Kaito said.

“Can I say something?” Andy said. “Not as your lawyer? This isn’t a good idea.”

“You’re the one who said we can’t live in fear,” Izabel said.

“This isn’t about fear. This is about a crap plan that provokes a killer.”

“By this time tomorrow we should have the killer in custody,” Paz said.

“You’ve been here for weeks,” Andy said. “You don’t have leads? You didn’t have a plan before this?”

“Not one that would work this fast.”

“Andy, it’s fine,” Izabel said.

“What about Cami?” Kaito asked Paz.

“What about her?” Paz said.

“You need Cami for the plan,” he said. “Somewhere you can hear her and be in touch with your team, with Izabel.”

“No,” Paz said.

“He’s right,” Izabel said.

“Have you both lost your minds?”

“Let’s take her to Lucy,” Kaito said.

“For Christ’s sake,” Paz said.

“You know what Lucy’s capable of,” Izabel said. “You know as well as we do.”

“We have a lot to do today, you know?”

“Jana needs to be there, too,” Kaito said.

“Why?” Paz asked.

“I won’t sign it unless we all go,” Izabel said.

Paz let out a strange sound, like she was yelling with her mouth closed. “Okay!” she said.

“Andy,” Izabel said, “can you draw up something about how nothing we say at Lucy’s can be held against us?”

“I can do it on my tablet as we head over.”

“I hate all of you,” Paz said.

They took two cars to the spiritual center. Paz with Izabel, Kaito, and Andy. Opa with Cami and Jana.
