  41. About the Author

“Izabel wants you all to stay at a friend’s house while she acts as bait for the killer.”

“Like a trap?”

Opa nods. “What do you think of that idea?”

“I want to be there.”

“She doesn’t want you to be.”

“Why?”

“Because it would be dangerous.”

“I don’t care.”

“Are you partaking in any reckless behaviors, Jana? Drinking? Drugs? Unprotected sex?”

“No!” Jana said. “I don’t care about that stuff.”

“What about smaller things? Taking a car to the wrong place? Spending too long outside? Cutting yourself?”

“No.”

“Because your behavior the other night was reckless toward your own safety, and then you put Izabel’s life at risk.”

“I didn’t want her to follow me.”

“I know that, but she did.” Opa paused. “Do you want to hurt yourself?”

“No. I only want to hurt him.”

“So you don’t think you’d partake in any behavior that would put you or Cami at risk?”

“No, never Cami. I wouldn’t.” Jana’s face was turning red.

“I know you don’t like these questions, Jana, but do you understand why I have to ask them?”

Jana nodded. “Do Izabel and Kaito not want me back? Is that why you’re asking me?”

“No,” Opa said. “Not at all. They want you back very much.”

“They already had to move once.”

“They’re not thinking about that. It’s my job to think about that. They just want you back.”

Jana couldn’t look at her.

“I have to write up my report, and the police will have a say in what happens next, but I’m recommending you be put back into the care of Izabel and Kaito. They’ll come to your room shortly.”

“Okay,” Jana said. But she didn’t look okay.

Opa came into the room with Izabel and Kaito.

“She needs to be on suicide watch and you need to start bringing her to therapy after we release her. I don’t know why they didn’t tell you that straight off.”

“Okay,” Izabel said.

“I don’t think it’s safe for her to be around Cami yet,” Opa said.

“She wouldn’t hurt her,” Kaito said.

“Not intentionally,” Opa said, “but she could. Especially if she thinks Cami can lead her to the killer.”

“I don’t understand,” Izabel asked. “How can we have them both but not have her around Cami?”

“While Cami might be released into your care soon, Jana will have to stay here a little longer. And in the hospital, they’ll have to be in separate rooms. You can visit them together or split up or trade off, whatever you want to do. You’ll have complete access to both of them until someone says otherwise, but I don’t think they’ll go against my recommendation.”

“Thank you,” Izabel said.

“We’ll start the sleep study after dinner,” Opa said. And then she left.
