LAMB: Chris? Put me through to emerg at East General. ( … ) Hi, this is Inspector Lamb of 56 Division. ( … ) Yeah. I’ve got a John Doe on his way over to you, with a serious foot infection or something. He’ll be there in five, ten minutes. ( … ) Yes. He’ll be with a lawyer, Hamilton Barnes. ( … ) Yes. ( … ) Thank you. (hangs up)

They’re waiting for you.

HAMILTON: Great. Give me your card and I’ll call you when he’s being seen.

LAMB: (taken aback by the request, pats his pockets) Uh … Shit. I don’t have any on me …

Hamilton isn’t listening; he’s helping Josef, who can barely walk. Every step is painful.

LAMB: I’ll call you in an hour, okay? You can let me know –

There’s a loud knock at the door. The three men freeze. The door opens.

ELENA enters. She’s dripping wet from the rain outside, and the small umbrella in her hand is twisted from the wind. She has a small backpack slung over her shoulder and wears pale blue scrubs and jeans.

LAMB: Can I help you?

Elena looks at Lamb, surprised.

ELENA: Didn’t you call for an interpreter?

HALF-LIGHT.

FIRST INTERLUDE

The sound of cellos rises into the air. Curious. Questioning.
