LAMB: Because he had a note that said ‘Arrest me.’ Written on your business card.
HAMILTON: Right. Though that could’ve been the two men who … (beat) I just hope his habeas corpus rights / haven’t been infringed.
LAMB: Habeas corpus?
HAMILTON: ‘To hold / the body.’
LAMB: Yeah, I know what it means, Mr. Barnes. I just feel like all of sudden you’re lawyering up. I’m a simple guy, and I may not know the difference between Greek and Latin, but I’m not an idiot.
HAMILTON: I never implied –
LAMB: Nor, for the record, am I a sadist. I can see that our friend here is in pain.
HAMILTON: Of course. I’m sorry if it sounded … I just don’t like to see people suffering.
LAMB: A compassionate lawyer. It must be Christmas. (beat) But let me ask you a question. Why’s his boot untied?
Hamilton looks at Josef’s boot.
HAMILTON: I hadn’t noticed.
LAMB: Well, he only could’ve done it when I went out.
HAMILTON: Yeah.
LAMB: You didn’t notice him. Lean over. Untie his boot.
HAMILTON: I was on my phone. (embarrassed) Angry Birds.
LAMB: Mr. Barnes –
Suddenly, Josef stands up and heads for the door.
JOSEF: Hodem vu bolnaku.[23]
LAMB: Whoa, buddy!
Josef takes only a few steps before a sharp pain from his foot stops him cold. He grunts and braces himself against the desk.
Lamb and Hamilton carry him back to his seat. Frustrated, Josef brushes them off and starts to unlace his boot again. He indicates he needs help.
LAMB: You want the boot off?
Lamb kneels down and takes Josef’s boot off.
LAMB: Okay, okay, I got it –
Lamb glances down; he gasps and recoils violently.
Hamilton looks at the foot and whips his head away, his hand over his mouth.
LAMB: Did you see that!?
Hamilton groans.
LAMB: What the fuck!?
HAMILTON: I think … (looks again, turns back) It must be an infection / of some sort. I don’t know.
LAMB: Jesus fucking Christ.
JOSEF: Hey!
Josef indicates the other boot: he wants it off.
LAMB: Are you serious?
HAMILTON: It probably hurts like hell.
Hamilton goes over and removes the boot.
LAMB: (glances at the other foot) Oh fuck.
Hamilton turns to look at Lamb.
HAMILTON: Inspector … !
LAMB: Yeah. I’ll call an ambulance.
With Lamb looking away, Josef implores Hamilton to help him.
HAMILTON: It’ll be faster if I drive him.
LAMB: I’ll let them know you’re coming.
HAMILTON: Good idea.
Lamb picks up his desk phone and dials out. During the phone call, Hamilton puts his coat over Josef’s shoulder and guides him toward the door. It’s a slow, laborious process.
