I know on some level she’s right, but still, does she not realize how rude it is to refer to Alex as a “nobody”? Oh well. Not the time.
“What does he do again?” Eunji asks. “Finance, right?”
I nod. “He does investments for fashion companies. He’s actually been really amazing in helping me launch my handbag line.” As I say this, my eyes automatically drift toward my open closet, to the blank space where my Balenciaga should be.
But wait.
Not should be.
Is.
The blue Balenciaga bag is back.
It’s sitting on the top shelf, right where I last left it.
But it sure doesn’t look the same as when I last saw it.
The leather is cracked and there’s what appears to be a pen-ink stain on the front side. It’s definitely been used and not gently. I jump up from the bed and run my fingers over the ruined leather, my chest pinching.
“Oh baby,” I mutter. “Who did this to you?”
I’m torn between feeling intense relief that the bag has been returned, and renewed annoyance that it was taken in the first place. Leaving a bewildered Eunji, I go out to the living room, bag in hand. I know it’s a stupid thing to get hung up on, but it’s my last day living with the girls. If I’m going to get answers about who borrowed the bag without asking, it has to be now.
“Guys, seriously, who borrowed this?” I say, trying not to sound too annoyed. “Come on, it’s not a big deal, just please, someone fess up.”
“Really, Rachel?” Lizzie says. “You’re going to spend your last day here accusing us of theft?”
“I wasn’t accusing—” I start.
“I can’t believe you’re really moving out, Rachel.” Sunhee looks at me with sad eyes.
I swallow my frustration, my irritation shriveling to a crisp. Right. Bigger picture. I have to focus on the fact that I’m moving and what a big change that is for everyone. I’m the one basically bringing about the end of an era, so I have to be the bigger person here.
“It’ll be okay, Sunhee,” I say. “If anything, I bet we’ll be closer than ever. One fewer girl to fight over the bathroom will do wonders for everyone. I promise.”
“I guess so,” Sunhee says.
“Oh, and Lizzie,” I say, turning to her. She raises an eyebrow warily, waiting to see why she’s being called out. “I know how important your sister is to you. If you wanted to move back home too, I would totally support you with DB.” Lizzie casts her eyes downward, looking the slightest bit chastened.
“And hey,” Jiyoon says cheerfully, “look on the bright side—now I get my own room!”
