‘I don’t know,’ she said. ‘I’m helping Dan to write his proposal for more funds to expand our programme, and I’d love to be a part of it. But I haven’t even thought about it yet.’
Anthony looked down at the floor, considering before he spoke again. ‘Speaking of funds, I ran into George Broughton-Smith a couple of weeks ago. I was with one of my clients at the New Stanley Grill.’
‘George, in Nairobi?’ Hannah asked. ‘What about Camilla? What about her twenty-first birthday last month? Did he say anything about that? I sent her a card, but I haven’t heard a thing. As usual.’
‘I’m not sure what’s going on there,’ Anthony said. ‘I haven’t actually been in touch with Camilla, what with being away on my sales trip and on safari. And I rather feel that George doesn’t think much of me because of that.’
‘Perhaps not,’ said Sarah, fixing him with a piercing gaze.
‘I didn’t get any reply to the card I wrote,’ he said. ‘I did send flowers on her birthday, but my plans changed and I ended up in Cincinnati around that date. So I never actually got to London in the end. Well, just one night in transit,’ he trailed off lamely. ‘Anyway, George didn’t have much to say. He’s only seen Camilla once since September. He wasn’t even with her for her birthday. She went somewhere with Marina, and he definitely did not want to talk about her.’
‘That’s very strange.’ Sarah was frowning, sure now that she had missed some vital clue during her own frustrating telephone conversations with Camilla. ‘They’ve always been so close. What about her face?’
‘He didn’t seem to know what she was doing about her face, or anything else. And Marina’s been ill, apparently. I brought up the subject of money for conservation at Langani, and he told me Camilla had never mentioned it. But now he’s aware of the problems, and he’s going to contact you and see what funds he can dig up. He was very positive, in fact. There’s nothing to be done until the new year. But he’ll get to it then.’
‘I knew this would happen,’ said Hannah sourly. ‘She just forgot about us.’
‘No. That’s not it. There’s definitely something wrong here – I know there is,’ Sarah said. ‘Maybe her injury was worse than we thought. That would take away her work, her money, everything. She might have had to give up her flat. Or maybe it’s that George and Marina are getting a divorce. I don’t know, but there’s something skewed here that we don’t understand.’
