“Knowing well that Douglas had made an escape from both of us, I left the mother and child. But mischief compelled me to say, even as I did so, that whereas I was obviously not legally ‘Mrs. Douglas Savage,’ it was also possible that neither was she—that there may have been a cornucopia of ‘Mrs. Douglas Savages’ before either of us!”
“How could you do anything but faint or weep?” Leon said admiringly.
“And wouldn’t that have been ridiculous?” Lauretta observed.
“Perhaps you are right.”
“Of course I am.”
“And since then?”
“I have been an actress. I left that company and joined another in Boston—after a series of small adventures—” She stopped to laugh at herself, which made him jealous and curious to know what adventures she remembered. “I shall not trouble you to hear them related. This is my third company. I changed again after the Boston one. I now feel quite shriven of the past. I don’t call myself ‘Mrs. Douglas Savage,’ but I have assumed the privilege of being known as ‘Mrs. Lauretta Savage.’ With actors the respectability of the marriage appellation is so very important.”
He stared at her, saying finally, “You are wonderful.”

Leon remained in Charleston that night, the next day, the next night. He and Lauretta were together every hour except for the times she was performing at the theatre. She appalled, amazed, delighted, and depleted him. She did not wait to be approached: her hands were on him as much as his were on her, stroking where he had never been stroked, pinching impishly, holding him loosely, gripping him violently. She taught him what she said actors called “the European way of kissing.” In the midst of one of their lovemakings—both seemed starved for each other’s flesh—she rolled him over and straddled him and pumped herself up and down on him so vigorously that he slipped out of her just as he came, and she swung herself about on top of him and lipped the head of his penis as it continued to shoot, and until it began to subside, her knees pressing his head between them until he thought he should die of completion.
