- About Susan May
- Also by Susan May
This job was too big. Not to mention he’d hit a snag with Amazon’s policy of requiring reviewers to spend a certain amount before they could leave a comment. He’d already spent hundreds to open separate accounts, and buy things he didn’t need, to enable his review privileges.
In a flash of genius, he visited a website which he’d heard about in the news.
Fiverr.
Any creative service was available for five dollars.
He typed the search term book reviews.
Hundreds of proffered services showed; all offered the same with a choice of video or written.
$5 will get you a video
- A 50 words script (provided by you)
- My choice of background (choose background for extra gig)
- Professional lighting, sound and video quality
- My choice of wardrobe (choose wardrobe for extra gig)
Took William a while to work out gig just meant job. Why confuse things? Just say job. If he couldn’t get his career back, he could put an ad on here for a gig. Maybe copy-editing errors in these ads.
He searched through dozens of providers offering written reviews and settled on Cathy123: Money Back Guaranteed. He loved the typos.

William’s hope was that, as in her ad, spelling and grammatical errors would riddle her reviews. This might imply that Orelia’s readers were an illiterate, uneducated slice of humanity.
Twelve of the Fiverr accounts replied within a few hours, agreeing to review any book he wanted. He paid them and even paid extra to the girl who video-reviewed, asking her to wear something which looked old and tired.
When the reviews appeared several hours later, William experienced a thrill as if someone had not just danced on his grave but also brought a bunch of their friends. They were fantastic. Derisive and hilarious to read and he patted himself on the back for his sheer ingenuity.

Quit when about 70% read

I got to the point that I had to stop reading because it became way too boring. I read to be inspired and for pleasure and am old enough to choose to avoid that which is horrid and I do not need to handle or see.

This story is really slow and boring. Go back to doing whatever you did before you attempted to call yourself a writer.
Every addition was so fabulous, William’s spirits lifted as each new one appeared. He continued to open new accounts using different email addresses and wrote his own reviews too. No amount of negative reviews was enough for his Orelia campaign.
