Somewhere in Logan’s brain, a lever was pulled, and tracks were switched. “Oh. Right. Is that what you’re here for? I thought… Nothing. Go on. What did she find out?”
“I think we know what’s missing from the house. Besides the mystery baby, I mean,” Tyler began. “See, the ticket collector on the train from Mallaig says he saw Archie and his family struggling with the pram, travel cot, and all that stuff, and started helping them on by picking up their bags.”
“They definitely had the baby on the train, then?”
“Aye, boss,” Tyler confirmed. “But it was one of the bags that the ticket fella said was most interesting.”
Logan took a sip of his tea. “Oh?”
“Heavy as hell, he said. Like… a holdall. A blue holdall, he thinks. Weighed a tonne.”
“Could be anything,” Logan said.
“It was bulging, he says. So the zip was burst open a bit, and he could see inside.”
Logan waited. “Are you dragging this out on purpose?” he asked when Tyler didn’t volunteer anything else. “We don’t need the big pauses for dramatic effect, son. What was in it?”
“Money, boss.”
“Money?”
“A lot of money. He couldn’t even guess how much, but a lot. Archie got a bit shirty when he realised he’d clocked it, and grabbed the bag off him, pronto.”
Logan stood up and started to pace around the room. He might as well make the most of that, too. It was unlikely that tomorrow’s room would have much in the way of pacing space.
“So, we’ve got a bag of money and the mystery baby both missing from the house.”
“And everything that goes along with a baby, boss, aye. There’s literally not a trace of the wee one having been in the house, except them marks on the carpet. And even them, we’re not sure of.”
“Why would he have a big bag of money?” Logan wondered. He answered himself before Tyler could offer a reply. “Nothing good, anyway. You don’t cart holdalls full of cash around if it’s legit.”
“Maybe he was buying the baby,” Tyler suggested. “Or selling it.”
“Then why would he have the baby and the cash at the same time?”
Tyler shrugged. This made Elmo’s eyes widen like he’d just become very excited by something. “Alright, then… maybe he was going to pay someone to take the wee one off his hands? Like, not selling it, but giving it to someone, and giving them the money to look after it, too.”
Logan stopped pacing and stood contemplating this.
“That’s… a possibility,” he conceded, then he shook his head. “But it’s one of several. Personally, I think it’s more likely that Archie stole both the baby and the money from someone who came and took them back.”
“I think my idea’s simpler,” Tyler said.
“These things are rarely simple, son.”
