“Well, no,” Tyler conceded. “But they don’t always have to be complicated, do they?”
Logan looked doubtful, but chose not to argue. “It’s good that you’re coming up with ideas. Keep it up.”
Tyler’s face took on the same expression as the one on his t-shirt. “Aye? Cheers, boss!”
“Your theory doesn’t explain who killed them,” Logan told him. “But, we’ll keep it in mind.”
“Right, aye. Good,” Tyler said, then he bounded to his feet. “I’ll leave you to it, then. Just thought you’d want to know.”
Logan met the younger man’s eye. “Was that it?” he asked. “There was nothing else you wanted to say?”
Tyler folded his arms. He made a show of thinking that was presumably meant to appear casual, but came over as anything but. “Eh… No. No, don’t think so, boss.” His mouth curved upwards unconvincingly. “Think that’s everything.”
“You sure? Nothing you want to get off your chest?”
“Well…” Tyler shifted his weight from one foot to the other. “There was one thing I wanted to ask, boss.”
Logan took a seat on the bed.
Here we go.
“Fire on, son.”
“It was just…” Tyler drew in a breath, then it tumbled out with the rest of the sentence. “Can I have your Pringles?”
Logan resisted the urge to glance at the empty slot in the minibar. “My what?”
“Your Pringles. I’ve already eaten mine, and I’m bloody starving,” Tyler said. “And I know you’re on your diet, so…”
“It’s no’ a diet,” Logan objected. “It’s a healthy eating…” Christ, what had Shona called it? “…regime. Or bloody… I don’t know. But it’s no’ a diet.”
Tyler blinked very slowly. “Right,” he said, dragging the word out a little longer than was strictly necessary. “Well, whatever, do you mind if I have your Pringles?”
“I didn’t get any,” Logan lied. “There was just the Kit Kat.”
“Oh. Was there?” Tyler took a quick shifty through the glass of the fridge and saw that the dookets for the food were, indeed, all empty. “That’s a shame. You should complain, or they might charge you.”
“Aye. I will,” Logan said. He stood again and began ushering the younger detective to the door. “Well, if that’s everything, we’d better get some rest.”
“Right, boss. Sure thing,” Tyler said, heading for the door. To Logan’s dismay, the DC hung a left at the bathroom. “Mind if I just nip for a pee first, though? I’ll never make it all the way down to my room in the lift.”
“Well, I—”
It was too late. Tyler closed the bathroom door between them, leaving Logan trapped outside.
“Click the light on, will you, boss?”
Logan sighed and flicked the switch on the wall by the door. An extractor fan whirred into life.
“Here, boss?” the voice from the other side of the door called.
