Logan tore the corner of the Kit-Kat wrapper, teasing himself with it. He could feel his guilt rising—he was still technically supposed to be on his health kick, particularly after the decadence of the wedding weekend—and was hoping he could get at least some of the chocolate down him before it rose too far.
A knock came at the door just as the kettle reached the home straight.
“Boss? You awake?”
Shite!
Logan grabbed up the empty packets from the room’s desk/dressing table and bundled them into the bin. This, he realised, only drew attention to them, which was the precise opposite of what he’d been going for.
The knocking came again. “Boss?”
“Aye, I’m coming,” Logan said. He grabbed the bin and shoved it into the bathroom on his way to open the door.
Tyler stood in the long, narrow hallway, dressed in what Logan assumed were pyjamas of some sort. They were made up of a pair of grey shorts and a matching grey t-shirt. A large bright red face grinned out from the front.
“What the fuck are you wearing?” was Logan’s first question. “Is that a Muppet?”
Tyler looked down at his PJs. “Eh, aye. It’s Elmo, boss. Sinead got me them.”
“What, when you were nine?”
Tyler frowned. “I didn’t know her when I was nine.”
“No, I know, it was… Forget it,” Logan said. “What’s up?”
The DC looked past him. Given that Logan filled most of the doorway, this took some effort. “Might be best if I come in for this, boss, if you don’t mind. Not really a conversation I want to have out here.”
Aha! Here we go, Logan thought. The bottom of it approaches.
He retreated into the room, and Tyler followed. The kettle clicked off, and the DC nodded when he spotted the two cups, each with a teabag inside.
“Don’t mind if I do, boss. Cheers,” he said. He pointed to the partially unwrapped Kit Kat. “If there’s biscuits on the go...”
“You’ve got your own bloody Kit-Kat,” Logan protested, then he relented with a grunt and a wave of a hand. “Fine. You can have half. But just half, mind! Don’t try any funny stuff.”
Tyler took care of biscuit unwrapping and distribution duties while Logan made the tea in silence. Only when they were sat down—Tyler on the desk chair, Logan on the foot of the bed—did the conversation start.
And even then, it took a bit of prompting.
“Well? To what do I owe the pleasure?” Logan asked, then he bit the end off one of the Kit Kat fingers and chewed while he waited for a response.
“I, eh, just got off the phone to Sinead, boss,” Tyler began.
“And?”
“And, she has a bit of news for us.”
Logan swallowed his bite of biscuit. “News?” he asked. “What do you mean?”
“About the case.”
