- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Two hours later, Spencer pulled into the driveway of the cabin she and Neve owned. The place looked totally different, with a new front porch, an expanded kitchen, and fresh paint. Landscaping had been put in, and four healthy ferns swung in the late-May breeze. Above the door, a rustic sign proclaimed the cabin MOUNTAIN MAGIC.
Neve came out wearing a maxi dress and waved.
“Where have y’all been? Chase has been freaking out,” Neve called, not even bothering to greet them when they climbed from the car.
Lorna opened the cabin door, and out came Chase wearing a lovely white-lace dress with wildflowers woven in her hair. Lorna was already swiping at her eyes. “Doesn’t she look gorgeous?”
She did. Chase looked like a new woman, and Olivia’s heart swelled when she saw her. “Wow, Chase.”
The former actress pirouetted. “Being pregnant suits me as long as . . . oh God, is someone wearing cologne?”
Spencer took three steps back. “I, uh, may have put some on.”
Chase thrust out a finger. “Stay away from me. I will puke.”
“How am I going to walk you down the aisle?” Spencer asked, adjusting his collar beneath the sport jacket he’d shrugged on and taking a few additional steps back.
Chase held a hand over her mouth and tried to take some deep breaths. Finally, she looked at her mother. “Mom, will you walk me down the aisle?”
Lorna’s eyes grew big. “You want me? I’m the MOB.”
“Technically, a parent should give you away. Not that you’re giving me away. I belong to myself.” Chase patted her cheeks, color restored.
That made Olivia smile. “You do belong to yourself.”
“So maybe I should walk myself down the aisle,” Chase said.
Lorna nodded. “I don’t think you need anyone to make a decision for you. You have your own agency.”
“Damn straight she does,” Neve said, glancing over at Olivia. “We all do, and isn’t that pretty damn cool?”
Lorna looked up at the dark clouds hovering above them and frowned. Then she looked down at her watch. “Oh, we have to go. Only ten minutes until the ceremony starts. I hope this rain holds off long enough. Spencer, you drive me since I need to be seated beforehand.”
Neve jogged down the steps. “I’ll come, too. I want to see the inside of the car. Here’s the bouquet.” She handed Chase a bouquet of mixed wildflowers and picked up her umbrella.
Seconds later, with much bustle and exclamation, Spencer managed to get Lorna and Neve in the small car. He gave Olivia a salute and a sweet, sweet smile.
“Well, now,” Chase said, her voice light with laughter.
“Yeah, I’m liking this taking chances thing.” Olivia lifted an eyebrow. “Guess you’re stuck with me driving you to your wedding.”
Chase smiled. “I’m not sad about that. You’re the person who gave me all this.”
