  31. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Who would Chase call? Where would she go? Spencer? He seemed to be her go-to person, but Olivia wasn’t ready to talk to him. She’d been avoiding him the same way she’d been avoiding Neve’s texts and messages. She’d needed time to sort through so much, but during the week she’d found she could make no headway on deciphering her path when it came to Conrad, Spencer, and her love life. Heap on the fact that she and Neve planned on having a meeting with their mother and then researching what they could do regarding their father’s probable sexual abuse of their sister, and she had shoved it all to the back of her emotional closet to address on another day.

Instead of figuring out how to handle the world spinning beyond her control, Olivia had thrown herself into writing the book, which was horribly behind schedule. Then she worked on notes for an upcoming lecture she’d be giving to a cybersecurity company on strategies to handle interns and trainees. So yeah, she didn’t want to talk to Spencer. Had even thought about pretending that she hadn’t slept with him, uh, four times, and was just trying to erase it from her memory, even though she knew that would be impossible because it had been four incredible times.

Still, adults did things they didn’t want to do. Olivia was fairly certain she’d uttered those exact words to her clients a bajillion times.

She scrolled down her contact list and located Spencer’s number. She’d entered THE HAMMER under his company name, and they’d giggled about the sexy innuendos he’d muttered in her ear before diving back under the covers.

Maybe she should text?

No, that was the coward’s way out.

She dialed the number, but it, too, went to voice mail. She elected not to leave a weird, rambling message and instead hung up.

She was about to text him when the phone rang in her hand.

Spencer.

“Hello?”

“Hey, Olivia. Did you just call?”

“Uh, yeah, I, um, wondered if you had talked to Chase lately?”

“No. I texted her this morning. She was reading for the role today. She texted back the thumbs-up and that was it.” In the background she could hear the clink of glasses and the low hum of conversation. He sounded like he was at dinner. Oh God, what if he was on a date?

Her heart trembled at the thought.

Which was stupid because she’d blown him off, and Chase’s safety was paramount over her insecurities. “Oh.”

“So what’s up?”
