- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
“It has,” Olivia said, looking up at her. “I never thought I wanted to live on the ocean, but there’s something restorative about it. I’m sorry you’ll miss being here.”
“Since I rarely spent time here, it feels odd to miss it, but I don’t want to go back to my apartment. It’s just alien to me now. I don’t think I belong there anymore. Honestly, I’m not sure where I belong. I’ll have to make a decision on where to live soon since I don’t want to live with Lorna, but I’m not sure I want to live alone again. Crazy as it sounds, it was nice living with you and Neve . . . even though your sister sort of drove me crazy at times.”
Olivia smiled. “She’ll do that to you.”
“Why did you let her stay at the cabin?”
Olivia leaned over and struggled to her feet. “I don’t know. No, I do. She needed a fresh start. I needed to find benevolence when it came to her. I’ve pretty much denied her true kindness for too many years.”
Chase glanced over at Olivia’s face. “Because of whatever happened that night? In the bedroom?”
Olivia’s face shuttered. “No. Maybe.”
“You said someone died. That sketchbook was on the bed. It had to do with your sister.”
Olivia sucked in a breath and released it, closing her eyes. Pain had flashed through them, and Chase immediately felt as if she shouldn’t have asked.
The night she’d found Olivia and Neve on the floor, tear soaked and devastated, Chase had waited for Olivia to tell her she was okay before retreating back to her bedroom. Spencer had stood framed in the bunk room door, rubbing at his eyes. He’d arched a questioning brow, and Chase had responded by shrugging and saying, “She’s okay. They had some kind of come-to-Jesus meeting or something. Go on back to bed.”
Concern etched his face, but Spencer had glanced at the closed door to Olivia’s room and then stepped back and shut his own door.
Chase had gone back to her room and tossed around the entire night, plagued by Zeke’s face and the way Olivia had looked when she’d opened her bedroom door to check on her.
So utterly destroyed.
That image had shaken her, but when she emerged the next morning, she’d found Neve in the kitchen making pancakes and Olivia sitting at the table sipping coffee. Both looked . . . settled.
