  31. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Olivia had spent most of the evening trying to figure out what to do about her life. And like Chase, she had no clue.

About anything.

She’d ended the past summer a competent, capable professional. Currently, she was a boozy, emotional wreck thanks to two glasses of crisp sauvignon blanc with dinner and two truly handsome men drawing lines and staring each other down with classic pissing match posturing. Oh, and toss in the very confusing issue of her sister actually playing nice and treating her, well, like a sister rather than Nurse Ratched, and she was more than off-kilter. After dinner, when she’d agreed with Neve staying at the cabin and overseeing some of the renovations, her sister had hugged her. Actually hugged her!

Olivia couldn’t remember the last time the two of them had touched willingly.

And tonight they would be sharing a bed the way they had long ago when they were girls. Back then they’d snugged into the bunk beds wearing matching floral nighties their grandmother had sewn for them. They’d read old Berenstain Bears and Holly Hobbie books gleaned from swap meets, trading them back and forth as they took comfort in the sound of their mother reading stories to Marley in the next room. Olivia wasn’t sure she was prepared for the intimacy of having her sister sleeping beside her again. She felt like an exposed nerve, trying to avoid any discomfort.

And if truth be told, she hadn’t been prepared for the intimacy of a man lying beside her, either, arm thrown across her stomach. Still, Spencer’s hardness, solid and warm against her curves, had restored something inside her. His delicious heaviness pressed her toward the best sleep she’d had since she’d come to the cabin.

Of course, unless she’d changed her sleeping habits in the last twenty years, Neve was going to kick her like a mule and snore in her ear all night.

Olivia shook her head and set about gathering her things to pack. She picked up the sketchbook Chase had left and set it on the nightstand and then started folding the shirts and pants she’d tucked into the chest of drawers. She’d just tugged on her nightgown and grabbed her toothbrush when the bedroom door opened.

“Hey, you’re already packed?” Neve asked, slipping into the room, carrying a chevron-patterned duffel bag. She shut the bedroom door softly, taking in the rolling suitcase at the end of the bed. “I got the guys some blankets. Getting colder for sure.”

“That was nice of you.”

“Spencer looked a little upset that I’m the one sharing the bed with you tonight. I can sleep on one of the bunks if you want a little more alone time with the stud muffin.”

Olivia shook her head. “No . . . um, no. I think it’s better we proceed as we are.”
