- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Olivia held up her arm, trying to shove the Oxford button-down she’d worn beneath her apron to her elbow. She’d paired the large shirt with jean leggings and a pair of UGG boots that were comfortable to walk in. She doubted Spencer had ever gone out with a woman who dressed like a soccer mom. If she’d had some Starbucks in hand, she could have been a walking stereotype.
Spencer pushed her sleeve up, and she noted how nice his hands were as he looped the coated paper back around her wrist, pulled off the backing, and folded the sticky part. The slight brushes of his skin on hers didn’t make her feel tingly like romance books said, but they did make her want to feel his hand in hers. His weren’t workingman hands, but neither were they long, artistic ones. They looked like the hands of a man who modeled a watch . . . naked.
She swallowed down her nervousness when she thought about him sprawled on those white sheets. All that splendid golden flesh. Good heavens.
“Okay, let’s roll.” Spencer didn’t wait for her. Just plowed through a few clumps of stragglers, heading toward the midway.
Olivia dutifully followed behind him.
Spencer stopped outside the barn. “What’s in there?”
“My sense of smell says farm animals. I believe there is a show and then an auction tomorrow.” Olivia wrinkled her nose at the pungent fragrances leaking out. She heard a few moos and maybe a squawk or two.
“I like animals,” he said, looking like he would insist on wading through the barn.
Olivia gestured to the line in front of the Ferris wheel. “The line is short. Let’s start here. I don’t think I can eat your lauded foot-long corn dog after having toured a barn.”
“Okay, cool.” Spencer seemed a most agreeable sort, which was a nice change of pace considering she’d been dealing with Chase and Neve for the past few days. Agreeable wasn’t a term to describe either of them.
They walked over and got in line behind two kids who were making bets on which color cart they would get. The bigger kid won with his choice of pink. The carnival worker secured the kids and brought the next blue car down for her and Spencer.
“Easy, now,” the mustached man said, taking Olivia’s elbow and helping her into the swinging cart. Olivia sat on the cracked vinyl bench, discovering it was much smaller than she would have thought. Her thigh snugged right next to Spencer’s when he sank down and pulled the bar tight against them. The car released and started rocking, forcing her to slam her hand on the handle in front of her.
Spencer grinned with delight as the cart lifted. “Now you can’t get away from me.”
