  31. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Chase tried to finish chewing the hot dog while not laughing. “What did he look like?”

“Like he belonged in a ZZ Top video. A little unsafe, to be honest.”

“Who’s ZZ Top?”

“Oh Lord,” Zeke groaned, popping the last of the dog into his mouth. “You’re too young for me.”

“You’re only six years old than me, but who says I want to date a thirtysomething dude anyway?”

“Date?”

“I told Annalisa we were. She made me mad when she said that we didn’t go together,” she said, hoping she hadn’t misread Zeke. She couldn’t have. He was her friend, but he wanted her.

And she wanted him.

“You told her that?” Zeke looked a bit shocked. “What did she say?”

“She said nothing, but I can tell it made her mad. Are you upset with me?” Chase hadn’t felt this vulnerable in a while. She stood beneath the twinkling lights of a Northern California rural festival, asking a guy eating a hot dog he was dipping in cheese to date her.

Zeke grinned. “I’m not upset. I’m amused. And so you know, I’ve always wanted to date a girl who knew what to do when a guy yelled Action! ”

“Are you making sexual innuendos?”

Zeke guffawed. “Hell, I hope so.”

“Maybe I’ll let you get to first base tonight.”

Zeke waggled his eyebrows and crooked his elbow. “Let’s play ball.”

“Sure, but you gotta tell me something,” she said, taking his elbow and looking up at him. “What exactly is first base?”

His laughter made her blush. Which she never did. But she didn’t care. Lots of guys had hit a home run with Chase London, but not very many had ever stopped to savor first base. She was pretty sure Zeke knew exactly how to slide into first and do it in a way she would remember forever.

After having been nearly scared to death by a stranger who bent down to whisper “Wanna take a ride with me?” Olivia recovered sufficiently to discern that the man beneath the ridiculous Duck Dynasty–esque disguise was the handsome Spencer Rome.
