  31. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

“Uh, I might be able to ask a few friends.” She didn’t want to tell Carol her friends in the business were in short supply, but she could call her agent, Marshall, and ask if he might have a few ideas. Then Spencer popped into her head. The Hammer would be a huge coup, and since Olivia seemed, well, a little interested in Spence, which was weird, and he had called her therapist “cute,” she might talk him into coming for the weekend if he had no other obligations. Still, Spencer wouldn’t want to be advertised as a participant. “I tell you what, Carol. I’ll volunteer to be dunked; then I’ll make some calls and see who I can find.”

Carol clapped her hands together and looked delighted.

Chase held up a hand. “But only if my appearance is not officially advertised. Let’s make the celebrity dunking booth something exciting. Like, you never know who you might be dunking, especially since some of the people I ask may be last minute. Feel free to spread a few rumors. Get people excited.”

“So I can’t tell people who will be there?” Carol looked confused.

“It will work. Trust me. People know I’m in town, so chances are they will think it’s me. But they won’t know. And that makes it more fun.”

Chase spent the next few minutes chitchatting (something she’d never really done) about Carol’s poodle, Larry, and the salad selection at Panera Bread Company. Not that there was a Panera in Cotter’s Creek—it was just Carol’s preferred restaurant when she went into Redmond to see her podiatrist.

When Chase and Olivia finally pulled out of the parking lot of Mountain Perk, the only coffee shop in Cotter’s Creek, Chase said, “Man, that was rough.”

Olivia chuckled. “Have you ever served on a committee before?”

“No. I had no clue how hard it is. They talk about everything, don’t they? Then they wanted to call the police because someone smokes? Jesus.”

“There are all kinds of people with all kinds of opinions on a committee. Being on one teaches you the ability to compromise and sometimes overlook stupidity.”

“Yeah, but some of them were cool. I guess. That hippie lady and Carol.”

Olivia nodded. “Serving on committees and volunteering for charities can be rewarding. Look at you, helping Carol get celebrities for the dunking booth. Think of how much money you’re helping to raise for sick children. That’s a good feeling, right?”

Chase nodded, because it was a good feeling. “I like helping kids. I guess I should have been using my powers for good all along.”
