- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
He slapped her palm. “Watch out for Mr. Cavendish. He will cop a feel. I play piano there sometimes, and I’ve seen him in action.”
“You play piano?” Chase asked.
“I’m a helluva piano player.”
“You’re a helluva lot of things,” Chase teased.
Olivia turned and rolled her eyes. “Let’s go.”
She called up to her sister that they were leaving, her heart dinging a little at the hurtful words they’d just exchanged. Olivia was surprised by how much she disliked the discord between her and Neve. How many times had she parted from her sister with hard things between them and not given it more than a passing thought? More than she could count. Why did it matter this time?
Maybe she was the one who had changed?
And why was that?
She wasn’t sure. Maybe it was this place? Maybe it was the timing? Maybe her life was coming full circle. She wanted to stop the static disruption but couldn’t seem to do it. She’d have to deal with her emotions and put together a plan to manage them.
A plan was always a good . . . plan.
When she and Chase climbed into the car, Olivia turned to her client. “Stop whatever you’re doing with Zeke.”
Chase made a face. “We’re not doing anything. We’re just friends.”
“Who are flirting with danger.”
“Look, if I wanted to fuck Zeke, I could. So cool your jets.” Chase buckled in before reaching over and turning on the radio.
“Remember the contract. No romantic relationships when you’re completing the Square One program. Friendship is fine. But that is where it needs to stay.”
Chase’s response was to turn the radio up louder and slide on her sunglasses.
Olivia decided not to peck any more at Chase and instead drove to Rock Glen Retirement Center. She was pretty certain that her client understood her stance with Zeke.
Thirty minutes later, she and Chase sat at different tables playing dominoes. The older gentlemen at Chase’s table were patiently teaching her how to play. Olivia could hear their teasing and laughter every few minutes. Chase was plying them with charm and her baby-blue eyes. Must be useful to be an actress and be able to play any parts one needed. At least the actress had stopped playing parts with her.
At least some of the time.
Olivia slid her domino to the end of the train. “Thank you for letting me come play with you ladies.”
Erma, a wizened woman with blue hair and ill-fitting dentures, cackled. “We didn’t have a choice.”
“Okay,” Olivia said, biting her lower lip. “Why didn’t you have a choice?”
