Who’s out there? The shadow creatures have come, haven’t they? They’re watching me. They’ve been watching me all along. They cannot be ignored. I’ll face them now, I will.
But Client 2 / Man on the Moon doesn’t answer. He stands, approaches the wall, and pulls down on the light fixture that looks like the moon fringed by stars. A faint HISS and CREAK are heard. The seam of the wall pops out, revealing a hidden pocket door to the outside.
White Fox conceals her surprise. So that’s what he meant by asking the moon and stars. But why did he say they’re waiting for her?
Client 2 / Man on the Moon holds a hand out to White Fox. She takes it, with trepidation. He leads her outside.
EXT. MAGICAL FOREST GARDEN — NIGHT
The garden is a gorgeous jumble of living things—somehow, it is not the orderly place White Fox expected. Wildflowers, weeds, chestnut trees, velvety vines, and mismatched miniature buds exist in off-kilter harmony. Lightning bugs flicker on and off, and the moon bathes the landscape in a gentle glow.
Client 2 / Man on the Moon leads White Fox deep into the garden and past what appears to be a meticulously maintained graveyard. Client 2 / Man on the Moon notes White Fox’s discomfort as they continue walking through.
CLIENT 2 / MAN ON THE MOON
What do you think? It was your idea.
WHITE FOX
A cemetery?
CLIENT 2 / MAN ON THE MOON
A memorial. Dedicated to the victims and their families.
WHITE FOX
Your victims and their families.
CLIENT 2 / MAN ON THE MOON
Yes.
White Fox leans in to catch the names on the monuments. She gasps, realizing they are familiar to her.
Here, the sister who sat alongside her brother every day in the lab and didn’t understand when she wasn’t let inside one day.
There, the husband with the kind eyes who cried when he thought his wife might finally manage to ascend from the valley she dropped into alone.
Behind and beside these monuments rest the shadows, curled like cats and at rest. White Fox notices them at last, flinching back.
CLIENT 2 / MAN ON THE MOON
Don’t worry. They’re well cared for now.
WHITE FOX
(peering more closely and sighing)
Ah. I see that. Well … I understand their true nature now.
The monuments glow with an otherworldly sparkle as White Fox and Client 2 / Man on the Moon walk on, approaching a clearing.
CLIENT 2 / MAN ON THE MOON
We shall honor their thorniest truths until the breath leaves our bodies or our good sense and sanity leave our minds.
White Fox nods.
In the midst of the clearing, there is an elevated cabin made of wood surrounded by the grand and glorious foxgloves, the foxgloves Client 2 / Man on the Moon has so lovingly planted.
