“Of course.” He passes me the puck, and I send it back to him, all the while skating backward. He might not fully believe what I’m saying, but at least he seems done questioning me about it.
A few minutes pass before his face lights up again, and there goes my hope of him being done. When’s the last time he left me off the hook? It’s not like I wouldn’t do the same to him if our positions were reversed, but Jesus, he’s getting on my nerves. I cringe, waiting for the blow to land.
“So if you don’t want anything with her beside a professional relationship, it should be okay with you if I invite her to dinner?”
“Fuck no.” The words are out of my mouth before I can think them through. And with the way his grin grows, he clearly knew what he was doing.
I brake abruptly then and glare at him. “You know what her work means to my family. I won’t ruin that, and you won’t ruin that. Got it?” I omit the fact that I definitely wouldn’t want to see Wren with him for some reason I won’t explore now.
He stops skating too, leaning his weight on his stick. “What about when she’s done?”
My body freezes.
An image pops into my head, of Wren and Finn kissing at a family dinner during summer, Callie playing with Wren’s dogs while I man the barbeque, alone. Something doesn’t work there. I don’t know why, but it feels wrong. Like if she were to be in our lives after the case is done, it would be because I asked her out on a date, not Finn.
Shit, maybe I do have a crush.
It doesn’t mean anything, though. I’d never do anything about it, at least not now. Besides, it’s not like Wren has ever acted like she’d be interested in me as anything more than an acquaintance. She’s so closed off most of the time, she might hate me for all I know.
“That’s none of your business,” I end up answering. I’m not about to admit anything to him. If I give him an inch, he’ll take a foot and start shouting from the rooftop that I’m in love with her.
“That’s not what an uninterested person would say.”
I roll my eyes with a groan. “Why don’t we focus on your personal life instead, huh? Have you talked to that girl from Italy again? Have you gotten over her? Who are you fucking this week to keep your mind distracted? Or how about—”
“All right, all right,” Finn says, surrendering with his hands in the air. “No need to get all defensive.”
