In a moment, we go from being tangled into each other to Wren having taken a step away, then another. Her breathing is erratic, hair all over the place, as if she’s just been thoroughly kissed. Because she has.

I don’t move, only watching her while trying to catch my own breath, which seems impossible right now.

“I’m… This can’t be happening. I’m sorry,” she says, not quite meeting my gaze.

Before I can ask her what she means, she’s gone from the hallway, leaving me panting and empty.

CHAPTER 21

Wren

The last fifteen minutes have been filled with endless pacing around the cabin.

I must have done something to piss off someone in another life. Why else would the Universe want to punish me like this?

Throwing Aaron in my path was a cruel thing to do. Giving me something I want more than I can wrap my mind around, but making it forbidden to me. I feel like Eve, looking at the apple, knowing it can only bring bad things but still deciding to have a taste.

It’s not like I haven’t kissed anyone before. I might have stayed away from men from the moment my mom got sick, but I’d kissed guys in high school before that.

Except that what we just shared wasn’t just a kiss. It was the kiss. The one that makes you feel like the earth has stopped spinning. The one that makes you wonder how you ever thought kissing someone other than them was nice. The one that could make anyone do something stupid. Case in point: I let it go on for way longer than it actually should have. I kept telling myself, just another second.

And now here I am, completely obsessed, knowing full well it can’t happen again. Or at least shouldn’t happen again.

For some people, maybe one kiss would’ve been enough to fill the well of need, but for me, it’s the opposite. I’ve tasted him, and now I want more. There’s this lump in my stomach, this heaviness between my legs, and it’s nothing short of uncomfortable, to say the least.

I’ve rarely felt the need to have sex with someone. Sure, at times I thought it would be nice to share this experience with someone other than myself, but I always thought abstinence would be what’s best for everyone. No sex, no feelings. But somehow, Aaron’s touch has lit something in me. Something foreign. A desire stronger than anything I’ve ever felt before. I can’t stop replaying the moment in my head. The feel of his lips on mine, of his hands on my body, of his hardness against my belly, is too strong to ignore.

Just as I walk toward the small bathroom in the corner of the cabin, three heavy knocks come from the front door.

Crap.
