Finn turns to me, the wicked grin still present. “Your turn. You gotta give me something here, darling.”

Aaron scowls. He’s been in a pissy mood ever since Finn met us at the bar fifteen minutes after we got there and joined the conversation. I don’t know why. Maybe he’s still shaken by what happened today and realized he didn’t want to be away from his family tonight, or maybe they got into an argument. Either way, I don’t care about it; it’s funny to see him like this. He’s never been in a foul mood in front of me before. Sad or anxious, sure, but never properly annoyed.

I lift my glass of sparkling water to my lips while I think about Finn’s question. He’s another person who’ll stop thinking about me the second I drive away from this town, so answering him is no big deal. After putting the glass back down, I say, “What do you want to know?”

“Well, first, how did you get so pretty?”

“Are you serious?” Aaron mutters.

Finn laughs at his reaction. “I’m just messing with you both, man, calm down.”

The two men exchange a look, and for a second, I feel like I’m missing something. But as fast as it happened, Finn turns back to me and says, “Okay, seriously, though, where are you from?”

“Boston,” I answer, my eyes flitting to Aaron. He’s already looking at me. He could’ve given that answer to Finn already, which means they never talked about me together. Good. “You?”

“Originally from here, but I’ve been living all over the place. Maybe Boston will be next.” He adds another wink, making me laugh. God, this guy. If he was a real stranger in a bar, I’d have chased him away already, but he’s obviously just teasing.

Aaron exhales loudly before lifting a hand for the waitress to come to our table. “Another beer, please,” he asks her.

“Me too, darling. Thanks,” the tease adds. She gives him a thumbs-up, then turns around.

“And what do you do, Finn?” I ask.

“Oh, you know, this and that.” He nudges Aaron with his elbow. “Currently I’m helping this guy out.”

“On the farm?”

Finn nods. I glance at Aaron, eyebrows drawn. “So you’re still officially in charge?” Guess he still hasn’t found a way to keep doing what he likes.

“Yep,” he says as the waitress comes in with their drinks. He doesn’t quite meet my eye after answering.

“Huh,” I say. That gets him to look up, but he doesn’t say anything else.

“And do you like it?” I ask Finn.

“It’s great. Being outdoor all the time is fucking fantastic.”

“Yeah, not my thing,” I say.

“But you always run outside,” Aaron interjects.
