Just as I’m about to head inside with my arms full of wood, headlights coming my way make me squint. At first, my throat closes up, but once it’s close enough, I recognize Finn’s truck.
“Hey,” I say with only mild disappointment, dropping the wood to the bed of the truck as he steps out of his car. “What’s up?”
Finn doesn’t answer, instead rubbing his hands down his jeans, which is so unlike him, I almost feel like laughing.
“What’s going on with you?” I ask, frowning.
I fully expect him to start joking around or tell me his nervous act is all a joke, but instead, he blurts out, “I’ve come to make you an offer.”
With a lift of my brow, I ask, “An offer?”
“Yes.” He dips his head sternly, to me or himself, I’m not sure, before saying, “I want to manage this place.”
“I’m sorry, what?” Did they all tell each other to make me pass out from shock tonight?
“You don’t like it, but you also want it to stay in your family. And if you and I aren’t family, then I don’t know what is.”
I wait a moment, then say, “You’re serious about this?”
“Dead serious.”
“But what about traveling? You’ve never wanted to stay home before.”
He shrugs. “Maybe I’ve found reasons to enjoy staying in one place after all.”
With narrow eyes, I study my lifelong best friend. With his slightly shaky hands and his clean dress shirt, he looks as serious as he ever has.
“I don’t understand where this is coming from.”
“Wren, of all people.”
I bite my tongue at the sound of her name.
“What do you mean?” I ask.
“She approached me with the idea a few days ago. I thought about it, and it actually makes so much sense. I love this place, and you need someone to run it.”
Wren arranged this. After she told me she didn’t want me. What is this? Some kind of pity move?
Even if it is, I can’t help but want to kiss her feet in thanks. She’s just solved everything. It shouldn’t surprise me, even though I wasn’t expecting it. That’s her talent. Finding things that are wrong in my life and making them all right.
If only she could do the same for her and I.
I clear my throat. “We actually just talked about selling it, but—”
“You what?” Forehead wrinkled, he walks toward the front door. “No, no, you can’t—”
I roll my eyes and stop him in his tracks. “Will you let me finish? I was about to say I think this is even better than selling.”
“Damn right it is.”
“Then go sell them the idea.” I let him go, and with a determined walk, he reaches the front door.
“Hey, Finn?”
His head twists my way.
