“Yes, I know . . .” I answered patiently. I didn’t want to get into a “thing” about it. Dave could be the “keeper of all knowledge” when it came to sports stuff; I’d just sit here and be the girl. “Anyway, Nomar is number five, and Joe DiMaggio wore the number five for his entire career,” I went on. “Did you know that after Marilyn’s death, Joe claimed her remains as her next of kin, even though they’d been divorced for eight years? Her mother was alive but institutionalized, and he stepped forward to claim her body and make the funeral arrangements.” As I talked about Marilyn’s funeral I felt myself becoming more animated.

Dave just stared at me. “I can’t believe you’re talking about dead Marilyn on a gorgeous day like this. I planned today to get your head out of the Marilyn Morgue.”

Now I felt bad. “I’m sorry, baby. I can’t help thinking about the Marilyn stuff because of the show. You know it’s a big deal for me to get the Marilyn show on air.”

Dave scowled. “Dani, I just want to have a nice day; I wanted to do something nice for you . . .”

“And you did. This is great.” I leaned in for another warm kiss. “Let’s not fight—let’s just watch the game and eat, okay?”

“Okay.” Crisis avoided. He took some of my curly fries and turned his attention back to the action on the diamond. I munched on my hot dog and decided to forget about Weight Watchers points until tomorrow, when I could start starving. The thing I loved most about going to a sporting event was the food. It was a regular chow-a-palooza with beer, hot dogs, Cracker Jacks, and more beer. Late in the game, with the Dodgers leading by two runs, Dave left to get one last bag of peanuts. He was gone for a while. Maybe he was off making arrangements to have the cameraman film us kissing to show on the Jumbotron. Swiveling in my seat, I looked around for him. My heart started to beat faster, thinking of what Lauren had said on the phone. Could he actually be planning the dreaded scoreboard proposal? As itchy as my finger was for his ring, I wasn’t sure if I could face Lauren with that kind of proposal story.

I decided not to worry. Choosing to relax and feeling just a little buzzed, I took in the lush field and stadium. It really was beautiful here, and I told myself I was happy. I felt a tap on my shoulder and turned to see Dave holding a pink Dodgers hat.

“Everyone should have a Dodgers hat!” he said. He adjusted the back of the cap and handed it to me. “Turn it over,” he urged.
