“Hey beautiful, it’s JP. How’s my writing angel today?”

Even though he was full of shit, no one could be too annoyed with JP. He was too good an ass kisser. After generic chat about things, he got to the point. “I got a call from a buddy of mine—you remember Jay Ravich, the lawyer?”

“Yeah, I remember him. He’s the guy who says I met him at Scott Rosenberg’s barbecue.”

“He called me first thing Friday morning after the game. He was asking a lot of questions about you and wanted to know what the deal was with you and Troy. I told him you were a good friend and a rising client and I didn’t do this sort of thing. I’m no pimp.”

I let him get away with that one, for now.

“So Jay plays hockey out at the Icoplex with a guy who is a good friend of Troy’s. Jay thought he could find out from that guy if Troy was really that into you, or not into you. He felt that if he got the green light from Troy, then I would feel cooler about fixing you both up.”

This whole thing was unbelievable. “I’m so glad you two worked all of this out so I didn’t have to be involved at all. Why would Jay even think I would be interested in going out with him?”

“He just—”

“Let Jay know that Troy is taking me to dinner at Capo on Saturday night.”

This news elicited a low whistle from JP. “Fancy.”

“Very fancy,” I agreed.

“This is definitely going to be a date with a capital D.”

“You bet,” I said, trying not to sound as happy as I was to have trumped Jay Ravich.

“Have a great time on your ‘Capital D’ date, and I’ll let Jay know things are good between you two.”

“You do that.”

I spent Saturday morning getting my hair highlighted by Jennifer J at Juan Juan. (Ashley Judd was there at the same time!) I went shopping and decided against jeans and went with a skirt that wasn’t too short and some great sandals. I wore jeans on our first date to the Lakers game and I’d been told that I had nice legs, so why not show them off? And even though I was meeting him at the restaurant in Santa Monica, I hid my library of self-help books in the closet. Who knew if the night would end up back at my place?
