“I think I know why you’re here,” Chloe began. “Oh, how rude of me—sit down, I’ll be right back.”

She left me in the living room, and I heard the sound of a refrigerator opening and closing, so I figured she was in the kitchen. “Here . . . let’s open some wine before we get into all this.”

“Sure,” I said. I watched as she poured us both healthy glasses of pink rosé.

“I love rosé wine, don’t you?” she said, handing me my glass. “I was first introduced to it a few years ago in Cannes, and now I buy it by the case.” Chloe took her glass and folded her legs up under her on the couch across from me. She waited for me to start.

“I’m curious, Chloe. Why do you think I came over here?”

“Well, I figure it has to do with expanding my role. The network wants to make me a series regular, with the possibility of the new show.”

“I hadn’t realized the news would have made its way to you yet.”

“Steve told me. I’m sure you know we’re friends.” She smiled.

“I know about you and Steve,” I replied.

There was an awkward pause as we looked at each other and sipped our wine. Even though I had scripted this entire exchange in my head on the drive over, I was faltering when it actually came to getting the words out.

I decided to push ahead. “I’m not here because of your expanded role on the show or anything having to do with work. I’m here because of Dave, Dave Gallagher.”

“Ahhh, Dave, what a sweetie,” Chloe said, sitting up straighter. She shook a well-manicured finger at me. “Please tell me you’re not still pining for Dave?”

“I’m over Dave,” I said.

“Well, it would be a shame if you were still hung up on him, because I hear he’s getting married.”

Chloe sipped her wine and smiled across the rim at me. She was actually enjoying this.

“I know he’s getting married,” I said.

She was infuriating, so relaxed on her couch, content to tease me and let me drink her wine. I was just a big joke to her.

“Chloe, don’t you think you owe me something? An explanation? An apology?”

Chloe blinked her eyes twice. “Dave was a great guy, but he was just a little too possessive. I’m sure you know what I mean.”

I didn’t know what she meant. Besides his remarks about Steve, Dave had always told me that he didn’t have a jealous bone in his body.

I pushed forward. “I know how you lied to Dave and told him I was cheating on him. That’s how you got him to notice you in the first place.”
