PONYO: Well, no. I guess there’s my aunt. She’s visiting from down south.

SHARKBOY: You need to ask her.

PONYO: I don’t know, I don’t think she’ll go for it. I kind of yelled at her at dinner tonight.

SHARKBOY: What happened?

PONYO: I don’t even remember.

PONYO: I was so mad.

PONYO: I told her to go fuck herself or something.

SHARKBOY: LOL, that’s my girl.

PONYO: She used to be cool, you know? But now she only cares about herself.

SHARKBOY: She’s scared of living, just like the rest of them.

PONYO: That’s what I thought, too!

PONYO: Promise me we won’t be that lame when we get that old.

SHARKBOY: We’ll never get that old.

Adam Pelley, marine biologist, television celebrity, philanthropist and ecologist and world-famous adventurer, is London’s boyfriend. It still seems so hard to believe. It’s as if the stars fell right out of the sky and into her front yard or something, as if the laws of nature had been broken. One minute she’s just a regular teenager writing algebra tests and fighting with her sisters, and the next she’s online talking to someone whose television show she adores and watches every week without fail. And then that person is telling her that he loves her. He wants to be with her and have her join him in his mission to save the world’s oceans. Suddenly, instead of writing algebra tests, she is getting ready to begin her life’s work alongside the man she loves.

Adam. Even his name is cute. Has anyone ever heard of an ugly Adam? She is pretty sure there is no such thing. There aren’t even any boys in her school named Adam. They all have dumb names like Hunter or Jayden or Cody, names that in a few years are going to start sounding really dumb when they have to wear suits and go to work or whatever. Like, as if there would ever be a Prime Minister Cody, ha ha. London isn’t super happy about her own name, but at least there’s a reason for it: it’s a real place that her mother was supposed to go to before she got pregnant. And even though London knows she must have been sad about it at first, her mom always tells her that in the end she got the better London.
