I’m curious who will decide to stay at Lengard. I think of Falon and his family, wondering what we’ll uncover about him—whether he was working with Vanik or Jeremiah, or whether, despite losing his memories of spying for SCARS, he maintained his integrity and ran Lengard to the best of his ability in the face of unimaginable opposition.

Regardless of everything, I hope for the sake of his family that we’ll discover Falon to have been a good man all along. But that’s something only time will tell. Time, and a very thorough discussion, one I hope my mother will consent to be involved in.

“Shadow, Echo, what about you?” Enzo asks. “Back to the Remnants, or heading with Singer to SCARS?”

I blink at the words, then blink again as yet one more puzzle piece clicks into place. Shadow, Echo, Singer …

“Code names,” Enzo tells me, noting my wide-eyed reaction but misreading it. He points at my brother and says, “Shadow, because he can erase people’s memories and leave nothing but shadows behind.” He points to Arryn, “Echo, because—”

“Because her power works like an echo of others,” I whisper for him. “And it’s also the meaning of her name.”

Arryn seems pleased that I remembered, nodding as she gestures to my mum. “And Singer because, well, Melody Scott.”

“Her code name is a little obvious,” Enzo says, tugging at his sleeve. “But it’s still better than mine. And before you ask, no, I’m not telling you.”

I’m only half listening to him now, because it’s Liana’s voice I’m hearing in my mind, the reason for my shocked reaction.

Your future is cast in shadow and song, your destiny filled with echoes.

Shadow. Song. Echoes.

Riley. Mum. Arryn.

All along, Liana had been warning me of the path I was facing.

I snort, and everyone turns to me, but I don’t care. All I can think is how ridiculously vague and unhelpful the whimsical woman’s words were. Why couldn’t she have just said, “Your mum, your brother, and his girlfriend will be a pivotal part of your future. The end.” The next time I see Liana, I’ll be having words with her, that’s for sure.

“Something you want to share?” Enzo asks.

“Nope,” I reply. I look at Arryn and Riley and repeat Enzo’s question. “What are your plans, now that this is over?”

“Well … without Kael, the Remnants will need a leader,” Arryn says. “Their aim has always been to protect Speakers, and with Kael gone, that won’t change. But ideally, it’d be good to start spreading the word about SCARS, to share how things can be, if they want.”
