I try to think back to what Kael said, and I’m sure he mentioned that he’d see if she could identify the serum. Either he forgot, or she’s so tired that it’s become lost amidst her other work. If that’s the case, Kael’s not going to be pleased. But then again, I already know what the serum does, so it’s not like we’re relying on Pandora for answers. I’ll just have to make sure she doesn’t end up with any blowback from this. It’s the least I can do to help ease some of the stress she’s under.

A quick glance over Pandora’s shoulder reveals that Arryn and Riley have finally reached the passage and are nearly out of sight, so I release a relieved breath and answer, “There must have been a misunderstanding. I’ll chase him down and double-check.”

“I saw him with Smith not too long ago,” she offers, stepping up to the edge of the water. “It looked like they were having a pretty intense conversation, so unless it’s urgent, maybe give them some time.”

“Good thinking,” I reply, pasting a smile on my face and returning her farewell before she dives into the springs.

The second she starts swimming after Jet and Keeda, my smile vanishes and I press a hand to my roiling stomach. If Smith found Kael, why hasn’t Kael come to find me? Smith knew how important it was for me to speak with him … so where are they?

Something about this doesn’t feel right. Some instinct, some intuition within me is screaming a warning:

Hurry, hurry, hurry.

*

I start jogging down the passageway, trying to figure out what to do, where to go. I’m presuming Kael had his conversation with Cami before Smith found him—or perhaps Smith interrupted them—so if I can find her, maybe she can help me find Kael. Either way, I need to tell Cami about the completed memory and the role the security guard played in everything that led me to Lengard. I also need to tell her about the serum because, like Kael, she needs to know the truth about what’s happening to me.

But first, I need to locate her.

I break into a faster run, only coming to a stop once I reach our room, but she’s not waiting for me inside. After her conversation with Kael, he was going to tell her to meet me here, so I’m at a loss as to where she might be.

Tossing my dirty clothes onto my bed, I offer a silent plea to anyone who might be listening as I rifle through my bloodied jacket until my fingers close around the compass.
