I decide to ignore the fact that he referred to Ward as mine and instead ask, “You visited him?”
“Tried to see if I could get past that protective ability of his,” Dante confirms. “No luck. He basically laughed me out of the room.”
That doesn’t surprise me, though I’m relieved that, for whatever reason, Ward hasn’t shared what he knows about me, not even allowing Dante’s mind-reading ability to learn his secrets—my secrets. I’m baffled as to why he’s not doing everything he can to cause me more problems, especially if Vanik is controlling his behavior and actions.
“Maybe I’ll go and see if he wants to gloat some more. He might let something slip by accident,” I say. I have no intention to visit Ward again so soon, but I need a reasonable excuse to leave the room without looking suspicious. “I’ll let you know if I learn anything.”
Kael gives an appreciative nod, and Dante just continues staring at the monitor as if hoping the missing footage will magically appear.
Looking at him like this, I can vaguely see the similarities between him and Enzo, enough that I remember to share, “I saw your brother yesterday. At Lengard.”
Dante stiffens, his dark eyes shooting up to meet mine. “You saw Enzo?”
Something about his sharp tone alarms me. I glance over at Arryn to find her already staring at me, as if she heard Dante’s question. My forehead creases at the blank look on her face, as if she’s deliberately schooling her features, and I turn back to see both Dante and Kael watching me carefully.
“Uh, yeah. Just briefly on the way out.” I swallow nervously at the sudden tension in the air. “I didn’t realize you were related.”
“We’re not,” Dante says firmly. “Not anymore.”
Sensing that I’m wading into unchartered territory, I hesitantly say, “I thought you were twins?”
“We might have been born brothers, but we’re that in name only now. No family of mine would ever turn traitor for the enemy.”
I blink, then blink again. “Are we talking about the same Enzo?”
“He had the choice between Lengard and us. He chose Lengard. I haven’t seen him since that day—and I have no desire to change that.”
“But I thought …” I look between Dante and Kael, my confusion growing. “Isn’t … um, isn’t he a spy for the Remnants?”
The two of them couldn’t look more surprised.
“What the hell gave you that idea?” Dante asks.
So Enzo is working with you? He’s working for the Remnants?
Yes, he’s working with me.
I hear both Cami’s question and Arryn’s answer clearly in my mind. I turn toward the latter to bring her into the conversation, but she’s no longer behind me. In fact, she’s no longer in the room at all.
