Her reply is slightly shaky, but she still manages to say, “Okay.”
I lean down and slide my arm around Ward’s shoulders, heaving his torso into a sitting position, grimacing as small slivers of glass fall from his jacket. “We’d better get him back to the meeting point before he wakes up.”
Cami shakes her head, searching the floor for something. “He won’t wake until I command him to. Or … you could probably, too. But until either of us Speaks him back to consciousness, he’ll stay like this.”
That’ll certainly make getting him back to the catacombs easier, at least in some ways.
Cami makes an “aha” sound and bends over to snatch something up—a cap that she places over the syringe before pocketing it. Seeing the question on my face, she says, “One of the Remnants might be able to test what’s left in this and figure out what it is.”
That’s smart, and something I should have considered myself.
“Can you give me a hand here?” I say, gesturing to Ward. “We’ve been gone awhile. I doubt Arryn’s patience is going to last much longer.”
Cami silently agrees with me, reaching down to wrap her arm around Ward’s other side. Together we haul him upward, both of us grunting as his full weight hits us.
“What the hell has he been eating?” Cami grinds out.
I don’t say what I’m thinking—that muscle weighs more than fat, and Ward is … definitely muscled. I can only imagine what Cami might read into such an observation. It’s not my fault I’ve paid attention to her brother’s physique. We spent a lot of hours training together. Even when I thought he’d betrayed me, there was no denying the attraction I felt toward him. Just as there’s no denying it now.
Attraction has never been a problem for us. Just … everything else.
“This is not going to work,” Cami pants as we struggle to move Ward through the lab and to the door.
She’s right. We can barely move him across the room, let alone along the endless corridors that we have to travel through to get back to our rendezvous point.
“Put him down,” I tell her, and together we lower him to the ground. I wince slightly at the crinkle of glass under his body, at the small cuts I can see on his hands and wrists. But there’s no point trying to heal him now. Just as Cami couldn’t heal me when I was unconscious, we won’t be able to heal Ward until he’s awake. That’s why I also know any attempt to free him from Manning’s control won’t work until he’s conscious. But there’s one thing I should be able to do.
“Hover,” I say, light flaring at my command.
