After business school, he had joined Klamath Capital in Connecticut. He hadn’t really thought about it; that was just the kind of place one went after business school. Plus, there was an intellectual challenge to the deal-making, a high-stakes game. Like when he masterminded the undermining of an imminent leveraged buyout of a pet food manufacturer, which cost the failed prospective buyers a fortune but made Klamath twice that. And twice that again when he maneuvered the same temporarily rescued company into the arms of a hostile takeover by a competitor, which left one less pet food manufacturer in the world but was a red-letter day for Klamath Capital. That’s when the firm’s founder (who had once kayaked the Klamath River) started talking to him about units and vineyards. Rafe already had a Mercedes and saw no reason to buy a Lamborghini. On the personal front, he was in a relationship with a lawyer named Taylor and saw no need to upgrade that either. She was smart and laughed dismissively when people said she looked like Jennifer Lawrence (although Rafe could tell she believed she did). They got along well and talked vaguely about getting married at some point just beyond the near future. The near future turned out to include an offer by Taylor’s firm to send her to open an office in Singapore. Taylor had mixed feelings, briefly, but she was ambitious and wanted to go and, once she had gone, it turned out that Rafe didn’t really miss her. He was surprised by that at first. He had not known which way his emotions would go.
