So I am delighted that you have recognized the substance, the relevance, and the craftsmanship of Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, in spite of the fact that the play is an unabashed crowd pleaser, playing nightly to ecstatic sold-out crowds who have only one complaint—that their faces ache from laughing so much even as they are crying their hearts out. It is recognition not only well-deserved but long overdue.

I am enormously proud to present the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Play of 2013, for Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, to the prodigiously talented Christopher Durang.
