If Cain knew, he would be livid, but I wasn’t doing it just for Cain’s sake. I was doing this for all of our sake. Abel was a loose cannon and was acting like a toddler in the midst of a tantrum because his favorite toy had been taken away. His behavior was dangerous, he was dangerous, and it was by my request that Abel was still breathing. I felt like I owed it to Cain to ensure that Abel didn’t create a mess that we couldn’t clean up.

I’m not sure anyone would understand our dynamic or why I loved him so fiercely. I did, though, and I’d lay my life down to protect his secret and knew that Cain would kill anyone that came for me. We were a team. The butterfly and the spider had merged to become one.

Mulligan’s secretary jumped from her seat as I marched past her desk. “You can’t go in there without an appointment. Mr. Mulligan is a very busy man.”

“I’m sure he is,” I mumbled but pushed his door open.

I stepped into his office and didn’t care that he was on the phone and simply closed the door in his secretary’s face.

“I’m sorry, I have to go, but I’ll call you right back,” Mulligan said and hung up his call.

“Excuse me, who the hell do you think you are?”

“Hello, Father. I think it’s time we talked. There are a few things we need to get straight,” I said, smiling at the terrified look on his face.

Yes, things were going to work out just fine.
