[question] I was only there a moment, because then I see this ladder going up, so that was it. I go up the ladder, and like a miracle, I am on the roof, and there are firemen up there. One of the firemen says, “Look at this, here comes the last one.” They order me very rough to crawl across another ladder, over a big gap to the next building on the Waverly Place side, and I crawl across with my eyes closed, because I am afraid of falling so much. It’s like a nightmare. So I go over, and people help me stand up, and then I just walked down ten flights of stairs like everything in the world is ordinary again. So then I am on the street, and a policeman shouts at me to get away like I am just a busybody, because there are people jumping and I could be killed, and a girl comes down right near me just then, it was a shock, and such a horrible sound, that noise, you don’t forget it once you hear it in your ears, and she is just lying there, so I go across the street. And everywhere people are looking up, so I look up, and the first thing I see is so terrible, the girls are just jumping, jumping, jumping from so high up. They are pouring out of the windows. Some of the girls were still on fire after they landed, and when they were lying dead on the sidewalk, the firemen had to turn the hoses on them, to put out the fires. Everywhere you look is something bad you don’t want to see. I see this one girl jump, and her skirt catches on the sign pole that sticks out from Blum, the fourth-floor business—

[question] What difference does it make? As a matter of fact they made trimmings and notions, but why you got to know that? Do you want to know what is important about this sign? This girl, she hangs there screaming, and she is burning up, and then her skirt burns away so it can’t hold her, and she gets dropped down from the sign, right on the sidewalk underneath, and she is still burning, and the sound, that was so terrible when she fell, like a bag of wet laundry falling. And they turned the fire hose on her, to put her out. They had to do it. You could see the firemen’s faces, they were so upset with themselves, they were helpless. I saw this fireman just crying like a baby. What could he do? Nothing. There was nothing he could do. They were there to save people and they could save nobody.
