- THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING
Janie:No.
Marlow:Yet the plans were withdrawn at one point, weren’t they?
Janie:Yes. Briefly.
Marlow:And wasn’t that because of you?
Janie:(pauses) No, actually it was because of my husband. He had a change of heart. He thought it wasn’t worth the effort fighting it. I was the one who persuaded him it was.
Marlow:Oh?
Janie:That clearly surprises you.
Marlow:It does, actually. Why were you so passionate about it?
Janie:Because … because I was scared that if we didn’t carry on, then Harry would give up on the idea of moving south.
Marlow:And you really wanted to?
Janie:Yes. I really did.
Marlow:Janie, can I get you a tissue?
Janie:No. I’m fine. It’s just everything that’s happened in the last twenty-four hours. It’s a lot to take in.
Marlow:(nods) Can you tell me why were you so keen to move?
Janie:From London? What does that have to do with anything? It’s not relevant.
Marlow:If you could answer the question for me.
Janie:I simply wanted to get away, that’s all. Make a new start.
Marlow:You had a good job there. You were a defence barrister? You gave that up when you moved, is that right?
Janie:I did, yes, but really I have no idea why this has anything to do with the fire.
Marlow:I’m interested in why you were so keen for the plans to go through.
Janie:It was a good business opportunity. It meant we could relocate. It meant we could live the life we’re lucky enough to have. That was all it was.
Marlow:Right.
Janie:You said you were going to be as quick as you can. Why are we talking about the build of the office unless you think it was some revenge arson? Is that what you’re thinking? Someone who didn’t want us building it decided to burn it down?
Marlow:No, that’s not really what I’m thinking at all.
Janie:Then what …
Marlow:I believe you recently met up with one of the employees from Morris & Wood outside of the office, is that right?
Janie:Yes. Once.
Marlow:Is that usual for you?
Janie:No. It isn’t.
Marlow:And do you have a friendship?
Janie:With Mia? No. I wouldn’t say that.
Marlow:Yet you went out for lunch?
Janie:Like I said, only the once.
Marlow:Who pursued the lunch date?
Janie:She did.
Marlow:Mia invited you?
Janie:Yes. Honestly, where are you going with this? My girls …
Marlow:I’m sorry, we’re nearly done. For the record, could you just tell me where you were last night?
Janie:I don’t understand: why do you need to know all this? I can’t be a suspect, surely?
Marlow:Like I said, it’s purely for the record.
Janie:I have yoga every Monday.
