  70. THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING

Mia recalled the words the doctor had uttered to her as she stood next to her mum. ‘Your sister is very lucky to be alive,’ he told her. Mia had looked through the window, past the tubes and the beeping monitors and the nurses bustling about the seemingly lifeless body beyond, which was supposedly her sister. ‘But,’ he had gone on, ‘if she does pull through, there is every chance she won’t walk again. Her legs were crushed by the weight of the car.’

He had carried on talking at them, but his words had started to fizzle and pop in bursts, and Mia could only grab at some of them: An accident on the road towards Lymington … Jess’s car veered off the road and wrapped itself around a tree … Believe the accident might have been caused by drink-driving.

All their worlds had crumbled in that moment. Mia had seen a flash of her sister’s future, but still she could never have foreseen how much it was going to affect all of them. How, only a week later, she would be packing up her old life and moving back to her childhood home, because there was no way her mum and Jess would cope without her.

But it wasn’t going to end like this. Mia was certain of that. Someone needed to pay for what had been done to her sister.

Tuesday 14 May

Initial interviews between DC Emily Marlow and the staff of Morris & Wood, following the fire on Monday 13 May

Patrick Carter, Senior Account Director

Patrick:I could tell there was an atmosphere, as soon as I arrived at the party.

Marlow:What kind of atmosphere?

Patrick:Janie – she seemed a little … she wasn’t her usual self. She’s usually so attentive, a great hostess, but last Friday something wasn’t right.

Marlow:Can you tell me how you mean?

Patrick:I got there late and Janie answered the door, but her mind was elsewhere. I asked her where Harry was and she just stared at me and then eventually smiled and said, ‘If you find him, you’ll have to tell me.’ She was trying to make it sound jokey, but I didn’t get the sense she was happy.

Marlow:And did you find Harry?

Patrick:Oh yeah, he was only out in the garden talking to some of the IT guys.

Marlow:You said earlier the party was a disaster.

Patrick:Well, it was. Because of the argument. At least that was the start of it.

Marlow:For clarification, you mean the one between Laura and Mia?
