- THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING
Laura fidgeted nervously in the chair. ‘I’m not following.’ She glanced out to where she could see Harry wandering back and forth as he continued to talk into the phone, slightly too far out of reach for comfort.
‘Oh, come on,’ Miles said, edging closer again, until she could feel him against her leg once more. ‘You and Harry.’
‘There’s absolutely nothing going on between me and Harry,’ Laura replied, contorting herself so that she was out of Miles’s reach again. How she could have thought him attractive, she now had no idea, as he raised his eyes in a smug grin that clearly told her he wasn’t having any of it.
‘Really?’ Miles grinned. ‘You may want to tell him that.’ He cocked his head in Harry’s direction.
‘Harry knows there’s nothing between us,’ she hissed firmly, making a move to stand.
‘Oho – he also told me you could be a feisty one,’ Miles laughed, leaning back on the desk, splaying his hands on either side of him. ‘That’s fine by me too. I like girls who can handle themselves.’
Laura opened her mouth to speak, but to her confusion found tears pricking her eyes, which in turn made her throat tighten. Unexpectedly she thought of Bobby, and suddenly she felt ashamed. To be sitting here, being spoken to like that by a man she didn’t know. She shouldn’t be here at all. She should be at home with her husband and her son.
She got up, pushing the chair back. She wanted to tell Miles he was a vile man but if she did that, she would lose the account in a shot. And maybe, for now, it was better for her to slip out of the office quickly.
‘What are you still doing here so late then, Laura? The only one left in the office, waiting for Harry. I see it with you girls all the time. You make out you don’t want anything but, if you ask me, it’s all an act.’
‘Oh my God,’ she muttered. She couldn’t hold her tongue much longer. Her heart thumped. She had to be careful. Her entire reputation could be damaged by a man like Miles Morgan, especially if Harry didn’t believe her. ‘I was waiting to catch up with you,’ she said.
‘Well, here I am.’ He opened his arms wide.
Laura shook her head, her hands trembling at her sides as she made her way for the door and reached for its handle, hoping she would make it out, that he didn’t lunge for her, though Miles was still sitting on Harry’s desk and didn’t appear to be going anywhere.
