Fire. It burn naturally then it go

Out. Will looking at it change it? Lawd, no.

So do you see how goodness in a man

Got nutting to do with who’s in his clan?

People act like dey gonna act, like fire.

Can’t make dem do as you yourself desire.

No matter the posh names they’ve been given,

Sons of high-born often turn out villain.

Now, as ALVITA speaks, we see the OLD WIFE, agreeing and supporting her, thankful for her intervention. ALVITA speaks to the real theatre audience, and perhaps comes out to walk amongst them.

ALVITA

There’s probably a few of you who are feeling

Yourselves, because you’re old money, reeling

It in; and you’re called Rees-Mogg or what have

You: Don’t you know you can still be a chav

In your soul? What have you done? Not a thing.

Depend on your family for everything.

Maybe your grandad was someone. Maybe

Your mum. What have you actually achieved?

Nowt. An old name doesn’t make you classy,

That won’t cut it, nor your daddy’s money,

Real class is a gift from God. It’s pure grace.

It don’t come from Eton or that other place.

Think about how noble Marley himself

Was. Him rise from poverty to great wealth,

But it was his ideas that made him kind

And good: None but ourselves can free our minds.

OLD WIFE

Dear husband, I must say it seems to me –

Even though my people are poor, country

Folk – I might be able to live a good

Life, God-willing, and do the things I should.

I’ll call myself good only when I start

Switching sinfulness for good in my heart.

And when you cuss me for being so poor –

Who wore just sandals and asked for no more?

In radical poverty he lived life

And surely any man, young gal, or wife

Will understand what was good enough

For a poor Nazareth boy is sure nuff

Good enough for me. No shame in being

Poor. Or satisfied with enough. Seeing

Them fools who wan be rich above all things –

But never can be? Those men suffering.

But the man who say enough is content,

Even if he has no shirt. That man want

Nothing. He is wealthy in his own soul.

Even if you call him a criminal.

True poverty sings, in reality!
