  32. ABOUT THE AUTHOR
  33. Also by Amanda Foody

Considered among the most powerful of healing Beasts; for years Scholars believed they held the secret to everlasting life. This may be a myth, but they remain a prized companion for any Lore Keeper who often faces danger. Make sure to plan accordingly, though—their Lore will knock you straight to sleep!

DRAGON

Wilderland: the Mountains

Class: varies

A collective term for Beasts of a mixture of reptilian and avian natures, who vary in size, power, and type of Lore.

FIRENEKKIE

Wilderland: the Sea

Class: Trite

These phytoplankton cover the seafloor, providing light to all the Wilderland’s underwater plants and creatures. In the late Summer, they become so numerous that some of the Sea’s waves glow a vibrant blue.

FWISHT

Wilderland: the Sea

Class: Familiar

Capable of carrying objects twice their size, these pelican-like Beasts make excellent postal birds. And their healing Lore might not work on humans, but it does just the trick for a Beast’s minor scrapes or bruises.

GLUPPYFISH

Wilderland: The Sea, the Jungle, the Mountains

Class: Trite

These tiny colorful fish make beautiful additions to home aquariums. They develop their rainbow scales from the foods they eat, and so Gluppyfish from various Wilderlands often look different from one another, as their diets vary with each environment.

GRAVALDOR

Wilderland: the Woods

Class: Legendary

Resembling a massive bear, the Legendary Beast of the Woods slumbers for most of the year, and some Keepers credit hearing a low rumbling in the forest that could be his snores. When awakened, he has been known to destroy entire towns, especially when feeling threatened.

GRUIGNAD

Wilderland: the Sea, the Mountains, the Desert

Class: Trite

These sea lice live within tangles of algae, but their favorite home is human hair. To rid yourself of them, Siggykelp water makes for a useful shampoo, but a mayonnaise mask will substitute in a pinch!

HADDISSS

Wilderland: the Desert, the Mountains, the Jungle

Class: Mythic

Being only skeleton, these serpentine Beasts have no brain, no stomach, and no insides at all. They don’t seem to eat or age, and much about their lives remains a mystery. Though I’m positive I heard one burp once.

HOOKSHARK

Wilderland: the Sea

Class: Prime

The heads of these sharks resemble large hooks, which they use with their sand Lore to dig bottom-dwelling fish out from the seafloor. Beware—they are known to indulge in humans as well.

JAWBASK

Wilderland: the Sea

Class: Prime

These sharks suck up small Beasts and animals from the ocean floor like vacuums.

KARKADANN

Wilderland: the Desert, the Jungle

Class: Prime

A large, hairless horse with an ivory horn and the attitude of a wolverine. I desperately wished for one as a child only to later learn they are nothing like ponies.

LEPINFISH

Wilderland: the Sea

Class: Familiar

The bane of all sailors, these “flying fish” jump so high that they can leap onto even the mightiest of ships.

LOCHMORDRA

Wilderland: the Sea

Class: Legendary
